A Closer Look at Prophase I centrioles
Use the highlighted words to label the diagram,
You will need to type them into the yellow boxes. spindle

Several events occur in the cell

during prophase 1 of meiosis, the cell
nuclear membrane breaks down,
fragments of this membrane are
shown in gray on the image.
During this time, homologous
chromosomes pair up.

During this pairing, sections of crossing-over

chromosomes switch positions, a
process called crossing-over.

Centrioles are structures that make homologous nuclear membrane

up the area of the cell called the chromosomes
centrosome. They are responsible
for making the spindle which will
move chromosomes into position.

The Big Picture Examine the graphic to help you answer the
questions about meiosis.

1. How many chromosomes did the

cell start with? ___4____

2. How many chromosomes are

present at the end of meiosis I? (Hint:
count the centromeres) ___4____

3. How many chromosomes are

present in each cell at the end of
meiosis II? ____2___

4. Explain how meiosis results in UNIQUE cells.

Chromosome sections containing genes

switch positions during crossing over.
