In For Hearing People Only, I read three chapters that explained some situations that
affects a Deaf person daily. The first chapter, chapter 178, explained how much Deaf people rely
on interpreters (which is not that much). The next chapter, chapter 182, goes into the
discrimination that Deaf people can still face till this day. Finally, chapter 185 explains Deaf
In chapter 178, I learned how an interpreter helps a lot with the communication between
Deaf and hearing people. However, it’s not a surprise to me that Deaf people can succeed
without their interpreters as they have learned how to adapt with communicating to non-signers.
I learned about in more detail about how Deaf people are still discriminated against in chapter
182. In the “What Would You Do?” segment, barely anyone spoke out and only one person said
the right thing which is that you should hire someone because they’re qualified regardless of
their disability. I finally learned in chapter 185 how Deaf people can drive. It’s honestly not that
different at all as hearing people mask out auditory clues all the time but Deaf people have an
Learning so much from these chapters, I know how I can apply them in my life. If a Deaf
person needs something, I want to try to sign to the best of my ability to help them with whatever
they need and also write it down if I can’t sign it. I also want to be able to speak up as well when
I see Deaf person being discriminated. After educating my ignorance on Deaf people and
driving, I know that since we all rely so much on visual for driving, a Deaf person has that
advantage as they will be more focused and concentrated on the road free from distractions.
