FINAL X 10 RESEARCH
The researchers conducted this study because we wanted to know the teachers‟
perspective towards the grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences students‟ behavior in
class in connection to social media. The researchers are also curious and interested to
know if this study can help the students focus more on studies and less on social media.
Through social media, people can use networks of online friends and group memberships
to keep in touch with current friends, reconnect with old friends or create real life
relationships, social media members can share their interests with other like-minded members
by joining groups and forums. Also the speed of Internet has changed the way people receive
the information. It combines the immediacy of broadcast with the in-depth coverage of
newspapers making it perfect sources for news and weather information. Social Media also
has been very influencing to the youth nowadays. It affects people with different race, age or
gender. Social media in wrong use can give a very big impact, it‟s either dangerous or
helpful. According to Livingstone (2008) opines that for teenagers, the online realm may
be adopted enthusiastically because it represents their„ space, visible to the peer group
more than to adult surveillance, an exciting yet relatively safe opportunity to conduct the

Significance of the Study
The study will provide insights on how social media changes behavior. This study
will also be beneficial to the students for them to understand the importance of education.
As for the parents they will be informed on how the students show perform or display
their attitude in school. The students also will informed on what common behavior are
reflected in class as observed by the teachers‟ which can be linked to their exposure to
social media. Once this behavior is carefully understood, teachers, parents, school
The respondents of the study are the eleven (11) selected Grade 11 Humanities
and Social Sciences Senior High teachers of Valencia National High School. The
researchers do not intend to include all kinds of effect that may be caused by students‟
social media use, but is only focused on the behavioral effects they have on the students.
Only Humanities and Social Sciences subject teachers‟ and advisers were asked to
participate in the study as they have personal interactions and observations of the students

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Social networks are becoming major tools for education, and entertainment. The
human nature is keen on interacting with people and finding common areas and interests.
In education, two things are prevailing: the use of social networks as a tool supporting
activities for the purpose of educational institutions, instructors, and students. The second
stream is the bad influence social network inflicts on students‟ behaviors and time
management. Social network is a strong tool for social interaction and connection, where
it can improve family ties and friends in a rich social context aside from its use as a
medium of communication it also has a bad effect on the users primarily the most active
users, the teenagers or the students. A study was conducted on 161 Tunisian students it
concluded that performance was improved because of students‟ satisfaction with their
family and friends‟ relations (Rouis, 2012). According to Arjan & Zaphiris, 2009 that the
SNS is more likely to be used by the young users. They also use these sites more often
and their number of friends on the SNS is higher than that of the older users.
According to Madden & Zickuhr, 2011 & Moore & McElroy, 2012 that the use
of Social networking sites is more likely by women. They have more friends online as
compared to men and use it more often. Their surveys indicate that women use Twitter
and Instagram more than men. It was also found that men used media sharing sites like
You Tube, blogs, social Q&A sites, wiki sites as well as user review sites more

A study conducted by Abu-Shanab and Al-Tarawneh (2013) they explored the
performance, but took the issue as a general view of social media influence. Their study
In a survey conducted by Bagget and Williams (2012), students agree that social
media is a means to connect between individuals and is used as means to share common
interests. Social media represents useful tools for communication and education, and
provides an opportunity for networking in any profession. With time constraints and
demanding class schedules, social media helps students to multitask because they do not
want to spend time creating multiple individual messages. They commonly use
Facebook, watch television or a video, talk, email friends and family, and write papers or
where social-learning concept analysed by Zhang et al. (2015). Learning via virtual world
also had been analysed by Zhang, Zhu, and de Pablos (2012). Krasnova, Hildebrand,
Guenther, Kovrigin, and Nowobilska (2008) stated that the use of social networks can
satisfy esteem as users can present themselves to friends who think similarly and have
common interests. Tobi, Ma‟on, and Ghazali (2013) mentioned the popularity of online
social networks and conducted a study assessing if their use had any impact on the social
5
and psychological health of Malaysian students. The authors suggest that it has a positive
effect on the health of the students. Tobi et al. (2013) also further mentioned that this
has a positive impact of user confidence. In addition, Kimball and Rheingold (2003) and
Krasnova et al. (2008) argued that using social networking sites (e.g. Facebook and
MySpace) increases user happiness and can reduce depression if Facebook envy is
controlled (Tandoc, Ferrucci, & Duffy, 2015). However, it is also argued that social
network use can depress people (Błachnio, Przepiorka, & Pantic, 2015). Ortigosa, Carro,
et al. (2014) and Ortigosa, Martín, et al. (2014) indicated that users use social networks in
order to support existing real-world relationships rather than to look for new virtual social
relationships.

Conceptual Framework
electronic texts, graphics, moving images and sound into a structured computerized
environment that allows people to interact with the data for appropriate purposes. The
digital environment can include the internet, telecoms and interactive digital television. It
is evident that there exists a relation between social media and their impact on the youth„s
change in behaviour. Consequently, messages can reach audiences and target groups in
real time and they can generate changes and tendencies. Today, young generations grow
up having great contact with different kinds of social media. According to Tapscott
(1998) talks of growing up in a digital environment referring to the youth as the ―Net
Generation. That children are socializing in a hybrid virtual space, learning in innovative
ways, creating a new language and practicing multicultural values (Tappscott, 1998). The
main characteristics of the ―N-Gen culture are: independence, emotional and intellectual
openness, inclusion, free expression and strong views, innovative, preoccupation with
authentication, and trust. (Tapscott, 1998 pp. 62-69). Also some of the online behaviors
better classified as online challenging behaviors„, since these online behaviors are
commonly practice by youth today and in the most cases these behaviors arenot
reinforced by the very structural characteristics of the virtual space, and sometimes the
7
manifestation of certain behaviors is necessary in order to participate with others in
cyberspace and enjoy the full benefits of online applications (i.e., publish photos in social
networks, chat, interact or build associations or groups with strangers in video games).
Additionally, a survey of risk, impact and prevention found that using the internet
intensively, taking risk online, going to chat rooms, and using the computer in other
people„s homes are the most predictive behaviors associated with exposure to sexual

conducting the study entitled “Teachers‟ Perspective on the Behavioral effects of Social
Media towards Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences students‟ of Valencia National
High School”.
Research Design
Qualitative method was used in conducting the study to examine the perception
of teachers towards the behavioral effects that social media have on Grade 11 students.
The study was conducted within Valencia National High School, Senior High
The size of the sample was 11 teachers teaching Grade 11 Humanities and Social
Sciences students‟ of Valencia National High School. The purposive sampling method
was used.
10
Research Instrument
A letter request was sent to the principal of Valencia National High School asking
permission to conduct the study. The selected teachers were approached directly to ask
some questions. The interview was done during every vacant hour of the researcher and
the respondents.
Statistical Technique
A qualitative research approach was used in the study. This study does not
require statistical technique; however, frequency counts were determined to help analyze
respondents‟ perspectives.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
This chapter presents an analysis and interpretation of data obtained in the study.
The findings were based on the data gathered by the researchers through the
questionnaires retrieved from the respondents. The data were analyzed, discussed and
interpreted according to the locale of this research to answer the need of the study.
The data below are the results based on the respondents‟ responses.
Table 1.1 What can you observe with the students‟ behavior in class?
Table 1.1 shows that 10 or 90% of the teachers agreed that one of the most
observable behavior of the students is facing the cellphone while the teacher is in front.
This showed that students sometimes could be very vulgar in their attitude with the
influence of social media. The second choice is students being more active in class, in
which 4 or 36% of the teachers agreed to it, which shows that teachers also see good
things towards their students, aside from that social media can also be a very good tool
12
for students to be active in class. The third choice is students are sleeping in class in
which 5 or 45% of the teachers agreed towards it. The way students act, it shows that
they are not interested in learning also it reflects the attitude of the students on how
disrespectful they are. Choice number four is students are not being participative in class,
which has 6 or 54%. This shows that teachers also observe that students sometimes lose
interest in class activities because they find it boring, instead switch their attention to
their phones, and open their social media accounts. The four choices stated above are the
main choices while the others are the respondents‟ opinion towards the students‟ behavior
based on their observation, which implies that from the choices we gave there, are still
teachers.
Table 1.2 In what way can you say that the behavior of the students changed because of
social media?
13
The data above shows that 8 or 72% of teacher-respondents agreed that one of the
observable behavioral effects is the way students approach their teachers or classmates.
Teachers have observed that they are not treated with the same courtesy and respect that
people in their generation used to practice. Choice number two is the way they talk to
people got the frequency of 10 or 90 %. Teachers have observe that students become
more interactive with the influence of social media, also it shows how people especially
students depend on social media and how it greatly affects them in terms of behavioral
aspects.
Table 1.3.Based on your perception which of the following can you observe in the

significant one, mismanage their time;
have the “bahala na” attitude, happy and
contented with “passing grades”, output 1 9%

copied from the internet, release their
emotion through media; forget the value
of face-to-face communication
The table above shows teachers‟ observation on students‟ behavior which may be
caused by their use of social media. The item they talk back to teachers’, got 7 or 63%.
Teachers may have observed that students talk back to them that it gives off an
impression of dissing the teacher. Choice number two is they bully classmates where got
become bolder towards their feelings or the students become self-centered that they do
not care about their classmate‟s feelings that sometimes lead to bullying. Choice number
three is they do not talk to classmates, which was identified by one respondent. The
fourth choice they rudely answer teachers, which has the frequency of 3 and a percentage
of 27%. The result shows that teachers observe students that same are quite disrespectful
as they answer sarcastically and students become too confident on themselves that they
forgot the value of respect. The fifth choice is they gain more friends, will 5 or 45% of
the respondents agreed to. It shows that teachers observe the students have become
friendly with the influence of social media. This shows that teachers may not observe the
students that interact with others fully, they only interact to those whom they know and
not those they meet newly. Three or 27% of the respondents claimed that social media
also increases self-esteem. Teachers may have observed that social media does not really
affect the students‟ self-esteem; self-esteem mainly depends on the students point of
15
view. Only 1 which represents 9% of the total respondents agreed that the social media
increases motivation in learning. This means that most teachers do not find any influence
difference between the students learning and their behavior in school. The ninth choice is
about students gossiping about their teachers, which got 6 or 54% of the teachers-
respondents. Teachers have observed students in the past without the influence of social
media and the students in the current generation, which is highly influence of social
media, has a big gap. The students before they treat their teacher as an second mother you
would see on how they value their teachers, as of now the students is greatly influence by
social media, that‟s why their behavior would be affected on what they saw and read on
behavioral effects is students become lazy. Teachers have observe that students become
lazy and instead of creating there projects they just face their phones and open their social
media accounts. Choice number eleventh is increases their knowledge, which got seven
votes out of 11 and a percentage of 63%. Teachers may have observed that social media
also has a big help to the students especially their assignments and their projects. The
twelfth choice is students become physically antisocial due to social media, which has the
frequency of 3 and a percentage of 27%. Teachers may have observe that students only
face there cell phone instead of communicating with others. The thirteenth choice is
students neglect studying which got nine votes out of 11 or 81%. This result show that
teachers observed that instead of studying the students face their phones and log in
facebook or any social media account. The last choice is low self-esteem, which got three
or 27% of the teacher‟s response. This result show that teachers have observe some
16
students having low-esteem, the reason that there are some students who are so sensitive
that their social media accounts affects his or her life that if they have small followers on
Twitter or Facebook it affects their socialization skills. The remaining choices are the
different perception or opinions of the respondents in the questionnaire. This means that
there are many behavioral effects of social media gives to the students.
17
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Summary of Findings
The result of this study discovered the different behavioral effects of Social Media
towards the students of Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences in Valencia National
High School as perceived by their teachers. The teachers observe plenty of things in the
students such as facing the cell phone in class, which indicates the attitude on how
disrespectful they are towards their teachers. Teachers also observe that the way the
students talk to people change, it was influence on what they read and saw in social
media and affect their perspectives. Students also become lazy with the influence of
social media, which the teachers highly observed in them. It also reflects that social
media can be very influential to the millennial. Students also neglect studying and use
Conclusion
Therefore, the researchers concluded that mostly of the effects of Social Media towards
the students as perceived by their teachers are inimical, though the teachers also observe
that social media can also be helpful to the students. Students also gain knowledge and
students become more interactive or friendly. Since there are only 11 respondents to this
18
study, it is not enough to generalize the teacher‟s point of view towards the students‟
Recommendation
Based on the results on the study, the researchers made the following recommendation:
1. The Researchers should give more options or choices to the respondents in the
2. The researchers should also consider their respondents number so that the results or the
3. The researcher would recommend to the teachers to be strict to classroom policies. The
teachers would implement classroom rules that prohibits students to use gadgets
4. The researchers would recommend to the school administrators and staff to order the
teacher to confiscate the mobile of the students when the class starts and return it after the
class.
5. The researchers also recommend to the students that tey should control their usage of
social media and use it for educational purpose only when in school.
6. As for the parents the researchers would recommend to be strict to their children. They
should give them schedules on when to use their phone and instead study on their lessons.
