Recording Self-Assessment #1

In this recording, I am conducting James Meredith’s The Red Cape March with the 8th Grade

Band. On this particular day, the 7th Grade Band took a field trip to JMU, and thus my

cooperating teacher was not in the school. As a result, this was my first time leading a class by

myself. I came into the call expecting there to be some behavior issues, as there typically are

when a teacher is absent. While I did encounter some problems, the class was overall very

respectful and attentive. When I faced issues, such as students talking when they should not be, I

took a moment to address the class and remind them of the rules and procedures of the band

program. After that, I did not face any more issues. Overall, the most important thing that I took

away from this recording was how much I talk. I tend to ramble when I get nervous, and say

whatever comes to mind. I am still working on creating concise feedback and instruction, as this

saves time and gives the students a clear and attainable objective. There were many times that I

did not understand what I was saying, as I rambled. Instruction was unclear at times, and audibly

led to some confusion as to where to start, who should play, etc. On a positive note, I felt that I

had a commanding presence on the podium and that the class achieved what I wanted them to. I

plan to improve my instruction and feedback, and to have a better plan of what I want to do

before I get on the podium and begin class. Watching a recording of myself was extremely

beneficial and eye-opening, and I hope to do this more often.
