Objective: with adult assistance.

Learning Target: I can show my understanding of the 5 senses by using a poem with the help from an
adult.

-assignment paper -expo markers of assorted colors

lesson?
“What are our 5 senses? Name one?” “Why is it important to know our 5 senses?”
“With poetry, why do you think our 5 senses can help us understand the poem?” (Call
on volunteers)
What is your I will have students join on the carpet facing the board ready to learn. We will do a
instructional delivery practice poem as a class to demonstrate how to understand the poem and identify the
method? five senses. I will explain that the five senses do NOT have to be explicitly in the
poem they can be implied. Such as with a poem about summer, you may feel the sun
even though it is not said in the poem. I will ask for both individuals as well as whole
class participation while teaching the example. (10-15 min)
Guided Practice We will, as a class, do the sense of taste. It will be on a big white paper with
the words “TASTE” in the middle. As a class, using the projector we will
come up with different taste things to draw based on the poem. For example,
on a summer day, we might taste ice cold lemonade or Kool-Aid.

“Why does this assignment help build our imagination and understanding of
the poem?” “Why does understanding poetry help us get stronger reading
skills?”
Individual Practice (If time expires, assign as short homework assignment, and discuss the next
time.) They will work with a parent or guardian (if assigned for homework) or
with teacher assistance, to produce one example for each sense using a new
short poem. They will write the word and draw a picture for the word. We will
discuss and share with the class next time. (7 min)

Closure As a class we will discuss some of our drawings and explain how they relate to
the poem and provide reasoning for why the drawing is that sense.

Assessment: A short fill in the blank quiz will be given out to check for the understanding of the 5
senses. This will be read together as a class but filled in individually.

Notes: * To save time, if needed, only two poems will be introduced.
