Comparative adjectives

We use comparative adjectives to show change or make


comparisons.
SUJ + to be + adjective + THAN + ...

I am older
than you.

You are younger than me.

She is more intelligent than him.

The books are more expensive than the pens.


Comparative of superiority (+ que)
Depending on the length of the adjective...

- if short (1 syllable / 2 syllables ending with "y"): we add -ER

That dress is cheaper than those trousers.

BUT: *if ends with 1 vowel + 1 consonant (not w, x, y): we double that

consonant:

thin --> thinner big --> bigger hot --> hotter

*if ends with consonant + -y: we change "y" with "i":

crazy --> crazier dry --> drier

*if ends with silent "e": add just "r":


nice --> nicer

- if long (2 syllables or more): we add MORE before the adjective

That dress is more beautiful than those trousers.


Wolves are more dangerous than dogs.


Harry Potter's books are more interesting than films.


Mia is more outgoing than Camila.

- if short: THE + adjective + -EST
