M
otorists along Genoa Lane sometimes get a
glimpse of old Carson Valley as Trimmer Ranch
drives cattle from pasture along Muller Lane
north to the home ranch.
Lisa Lekumberry said this year’s drive of 200 head of cattle
accomplished a couple of things, including separating out the
bulls and moving to fresh pasture.
Seven drovers worked the drive, including Lekumberry,
husband J.B., children Anna and Etienne, Corey and Elizabeth
Billman and family friend Kim Speer.

Lekumberry, who is the granddaughter of Arnold Trimmer

and the daughter of Roy and Shirley Giovacchini, said the cattle
were driven on a narrow road along the river and then west up
Genoa Lane.
Most cattle drives in Carson Valley are over short distances,
but there was a time when cattle would be driven up into the
mountains during the summer for better feed.
Those drives would go up public highways, including
down the middle of Stateline, as they headed up to public and
private pastures in the Sierra.
The Trimmer Ranch, or Ranch No. 1, was the first piece of
land claimed when the first settlers arrived in Genoa.
The Giovacchinis’ three daughters, Sheri Walters, Terri
Billman, and Lekumberry operate the ranch and the family
owns Trimmer Outpost in Genoa. ■

Lady Tigers enjoying
golden era for soccer

T
hese are heady times at Douglas High for the Lady Tiger
soccer program.
At no other time in the program’s storied history has
the team appeared in two consecutive regional title games,
much less three.
At no other time has the team won back-to-back regional
titles. Winning back-to-back state titles is something else
entirely.
Heading into next season, this group has already done all
of those things.
This junior class, a group including fi ve players that have
been starting since their freshman year, has won 63 games
with their senior year still to come. The program’s all-time
winningest class was the class of 2002. That group won 64
games.
The program’s three winningest seasons have all come in
the last three years.

And, the 2010 group had among the toughest roads to

plow to get to where they ended up. They had to play through
the re-formatted Northern 4A, where you see every team in
the region and every game counts toward the postseason
standings. And there was that little matter of the gigantic target
painted on their backs after dominating the region over the
prior two seasons.
But the Lady Tigers tied the school mark for wins in a
season (22, equal with their performance last year) and beat
everyone in the Northern 4A (with the exception of Reno,
whom they tied) at least once along the way. Next season is
what most programs would call a payoff year.
The Tigers are set to return 18 players (including nine
regular starters and 15 who saw significant playing time this Above:

Tiger spikers were close to flawless

There wasn’t much to pick apart when it came to the
Douglas High School volleyball’s 2010 season.
The Tigers rolled through the season with a 36-
2 record. They went unbeaten against Northern 4A
teams, capturing the Sierra League championship for
the first time in two years and the Northern 4A Regional
championship for the first time in 10 years.
But that was only the primer for the crown jewel.
The Lady Tigers captured the school’s first state title in
the sport since 1998 and staked their claim as the most
dominating team in school history with its 36 wins
ranking as the most in the program’s history.

beautiful day to go out and take photos for the Almanac’s
annual Day in the Life of Carson Valley.
About three dozen photo enthusiasts broke out their
cameras. They shot landscapes and street scenes. They stopped
their cars on country lanes, drove up Kingsbury Grade and took
pictures of their families, pets and neighbors. They even took
pictures of each other in some instances.
Photographers are welcome to participate in the Day in the
