MEANING OF SPIRITUAL
LEADERSHIP
1. The values, attitudes, and behaviors that
are necessary to intrinsically motivate
one’s self and others so that they have a
sense of spiritual survival through calling
and membership.
2. “An intimate leadership approach” that
aims to create a workplace where
meaningful and close relationships exist
among employees.
3. An effort to involve leaders and also
followers to achieve “spiritual well-being”.
COMPONENTS OF SPIRITUAL
LEADERSHIP
Spiritual leadership comprises three principal components, vision, hope/faith, and
altruistic love, as the leader’s values, attitudes, and behaviors, respectively.

1. Vision: It refers to a meaningful future, causing employees to feel intrinsic self-

value and life purpose.
2. Hope/faith: It reflects the leader’s confidence in the achievability of the vision,
high levels of which can inspire subordinates to accomplish the organizational
mission.
3. Altruistic love: It exhibits a series of leader behaviors valuing mutual care and
respect and producing a sense of being understood and appreciated by
organizational members, based on which a favorable organizational culture is
likely to be forged.
POSITIVE IMPACT OF SPIRITUAL
LEADERSHIP ON WORKFORCE

spirituality values and exhibiting altruistic love in the workplace.
2. Intrinsic motivation helps in improving the performance and learning of the
workforce in order to increase their productivity.
3. Improvement in mental health and general life satisfaction of employees.
4. Brings a sense of security and satisfaction which motivates employees to be
productive.
5. Individuals are recognized for the work they do because of the Altruistic love.
NEGATIVE IMPACT OF SPIRITUAL
LEADERSHIP ON WORKFORCE
1. The spiritual feeling and focus might lead to loss of focus on business
objectives resulting in organizational and business targets being neglected.
2. Not everybody is spiritual, therefore non spiritual people might not fit in.
3. Some spiritual leaders use their religious beliefs as a guide for the way they act
but when leader forces his or her religious beliefs on employees then it creates
a negative impact on the workforce.
4. Under Spiritual leadership there is a risk that conflicts and feedback are swept
under the rug in order to not disrupt the feeling of harmony in the workforce.
REAL LIFE EXAMPLES OF
SPIRITUAL LEADERS
Some of the best examples of Spiritual leaders are Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa,
Jesus Christ, Swami Vivekanand and many more. All these leaders have some
characteristics in common and those are:

1. They impact their atmosphere.

2. They help people see old things in new ways.
3. They gain a following because of who they are and not because of a position
they hold.
4. They lead others to discover their own purpose and identity.
