UNITOR NITROGEN N2-INERT GAS SYSTEM FOR PURGING
INERT GAS SYSTEM AND PADDING, SINGLE RACK 63-00-105

SYSTEM ll:S:H PT1 OJ

This N2-inert gas system is designed for use on
chemical tankers, offshore supply ships and orange
juice and wine carriers where a system for purging and
padding is required.
The system is designed to maintain a nitrogen blanket
at 0.15 bar at the cargo during voyage, and to purge
the cargo line before and after discharging the cargo
tanks.
The system consists of a single row cylinder central,
including racks, manifolds, high pressure hoses and a
reducer cabinet with one line for purging and one line
for padding.
Gas cylinders with filling, pipes, clamps, bushings
and other deck equipment to be ordered in necessary
quantities.
The Unitor standard 50 I. nitrogen cylinders is
designed for a filling pressure of ·200 bar. Most
countries have their own regulation regarding filling
pressure and testing of cylinders. The filling
pressure can therefor variate, normally from 150 to
200 bar.
200 bar cylinder pressure gives an available capacity
of 10 Nm3, while 150 bar corresponds to 7.5 Nm 3 •
When the cylinder valves are opened, all operations
are controlled at the reducer cabinet.

5'Y'ST8VI LAYO.Jr
The system consists of the following main components:
- 50 I. nitrogen cylinders which are situated in
erect position fastened in racks for two or four
cylinders for single row mounting. The cylinder
station can be assembled to any number of
cylinders. The racks shall be screwed or welded to
the bulkhead.
- The door to the cylinder store must be marked with
the warning sign: "GAS UNDER PRESSURE".

UNITOR NITROGEN N2-INERT GAS SYSTEM FOR PURGING

INERT GAS SYSTEM AND PADDING, SINGLE RACK 63-00-105

- Each cylinder is connected to a manifold with high

a pressure hose and a: non-return va,lye. The non-
return valve prevent gas from flowing back through
the hose, and makes it possible to remove any of
the cylinders in the central and still continue to
use the remaining cylinders
- A reducer cabinet with a TMO 630 high pressure
regulator, regulating the cylinder pressure down
to 7 bar for purging operations and supply to the
low pressure regulator for padding operation. This
regulator reduces the pressure from 7 down to 0.15
bar.
- The regulator for padding operations can either be
a 95 L with a capacity of 85 m3/h nitrogen at 0.15
bar or a 730 8 with a capacity of more than 200
m3/h nitrogen at 0.15 bar.
The reducer cabinet also includes pressure gauges
and safety valves for all pressure steps, closing
valves on both sides of the regulators and non-
return valves on the outlets.
The reducer cabinet is designed tor direct placing
on a bulkhead on board.

The cargo tanks involved have an open connection to

the main nitrogen pipe line for padding. The pressure
will be kept under a constant pressure at 0.15 bar
from the low pressure regulator. With pressure drops
in a tank, the regulator will automatically supply
more nitrogen to build up the pressure.
A short instruction for use is situated on the inside
of the reducer cabinet.
- Open the cylinder valves.
- Close the regulator.
- Open the inlet valve and the outlet valve.
- Adjust the regulator against free flow at the
desired pressure. For purging operations it will
normally be from 7.0 to 10.0 bar.
For padding it will normally be 0.15 bar.
- Close the inlet valve when the system is not in
use.

UNITOR NITROGEN CHEMICAL TANKERS
INERT GAS SYSTEM PURGING AND PADDING N.A.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
For chemical- and parcel tankers a great number of cargoes
need to be transported under a protective nitrogen
padding. The nitrogen padding will prevent the chemicals
from reacting with the oxygen or moisture in the air. The
nitrogen padding wilt ensure the quality of the cargo as
well as act as an inert gas, preventing possible ignition
and fire.
The nitrogen padding is to be maintained automatically at
a pressure above 0.07 bar at all time and below the
opening pressure of the pressure/vacuum valves which
typically is 0.21 bar.
- - - - ---~-------=-The capacity of- the nttrogen SUppry-torpaaCfingfiave to ~-·-·
be sufficient to maintain an overpressure in the vent-
risers even when the cargo is splashing into the vent-
riser and producing a pumping effect.
The Unitor reducer cabinets will be delivered with low
pressure regulators with capacities >80 Nm3/h alternative
>150 Nm 3/h.
The nitrogen system is also designed to give a high
capacity nitrogen flow > 100 Nm 3/h at 7-1 0 bar pressure
for purging of cargo lines and cargo pumps.
The arrangement on deck will typically be one or two
nitrogen main lines 1-2" for cargo padding with manifolds
at each vent.-riser station. The same or a separate
nitrogen line will be branched to each deepwell pump for
nitrogen supply for purging of the pumps and cargo lines.
At each connection to the cargo tanks and to the cargo
handling system, a shut-down valve and a low pressure non-
return valve with a flexible connection will give the
required cargo segregation.
Rules and regulations to be considered.

UNITOR NITROGEN CHEMICAL TANKERS

1NERT GAS SYSTEM PURGING AND PADDING N.A.

Typically the operator of the ship have experience and

will specify the required number of cylinders.
If nothing is specified, total nitrogen volume to be
available on board will typically be 2-5% of total
cargo volume.
As a minimum, providing gas tight cargo tanks with no
leakage, the nitrogen system is to maintain the
required pressure in the tanks under changing
atmospheric condition. Ref. 63-00-991-1-E.
From experience the nitrogen system will be from 20 to
40 N-50 cylinders.

ALTERNATIVE OR SUPPLEMENTARY EQUIPMENT

Unitor membrane nitrogen generator can substitute a
cylinder system. Typically a 2-3 m3 10 bar tank will
provide back-up nitrogen for padding. A nitrogen generator
will make the ship independent of nitrogen supply from
shore.
Unitor membrane nitrogen generator together with a
high pressure booster compressor can provide nitrogen
for accumulation in a high pressure nitrogen cylinder
system.
A nitrogen generator with a booster compressor and a
cylinder storage system will give a high capacity
system independent from shore supply.

S)'lrt•OOTOR NITROGEN '··
INERT GAS SYSTEM NITROGEN GAS N.A.

PROPERTIES
Nitrogen (N2) is a colourless gas, w~thout smell or taste,
slightly lighter than air ( 0. 97). The earth's atmosphere
at sea level consists of 78.03 vol.% nitrogen, 75,5% in
weight. Nitrogen is not poisonous, but suffocating without
any warning when used to reauce the oxy~n content in the
air. It is slightly soluble in water and other liquids,
and has poor properties:for conduction of heat and
electricity.
Nitrogen does not ~gnite, ~d does not support either
combustion or breathing .. ·
Nitrogen acts l.ike a ·"inert" gas towards most materials.
Oxidation symptoms on sol':i.d materials and liquids can be
delayed or completely. stopped in an atmosphere of 100
val. % nitrogen. .. ;
Nitrogen will bind to .some of the more active metals, such
as lithium and magn_esium ·ni.trites. At high temperatures it
will also bind to hydrogen and oxygen as well as other
base elements.
Pure nitrogen is produced industrially in different ways.
Either by rectification (distillation) of liquid air, as a
waste product when producing oxygen, or by straining of
air in a nitrogen generato~.
At cryogenic temperatures ·(;..196°C} nitrogen acts as a
liquid, not magnetiq ~or; to~ic, and doe;.s not create any
irritating vapour. I
· • •-

Normally nitrogen i~ ·stor~d and transported as a gas at

200 bar in cylinders or, ·fqr bigger quantities, as a
cryogenic liquid at a pressur~ lower than 14 bar.

APPLICATION
Nitrogen is used t.o 'prevent danger for oxidation,
combustion, explosion or fire. Most nitrogen is used in:
as gas:
- making ~~onia
- pressure testing of systems
- inerting of pipes and tanks
- washing of melted metals (disoxidating)
- covering combustible and explosive materials.
