The system consists of the following main components:
- 50 I. nitrogen cylinders which are situated in
erect position fastened in racks for two or four
cylinders for single row mounting. The cylinder
station can be assembled to any number of
cylinders. The racks shall be screwed or welded to
the bulkhead.
- The door to the cylinder store must be marked with
the warning sign: "GAS UNDER PRESSURE".

UNITOR NITROGEN CHEMICAL TANKERS
INERT GAS SYSTEM PURGING AND PADDING N.A.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
For chemical- and parcel tankers a great number of cargoes
need to be transported under a protective nitrogen
padding. The nitrogen padding will prevent the chemicals
from reacting with the oxygen or moisture in the air. The
nitrogen padding wilt ensure the quality of the cargo as
well as act as an inert gas, preventing possible ignition
and fire.
The nitrogen padding is to be maintained automatically at
a pressure above 0.07 bar at all time and below the
opening pressure of the pressure/vacuum valves which
typically is 0.21 bar.
- - - - ---~-------=-The capacity of- the nttrogen SUppry-torpaaCfingfiave to ~-·-·
be sufficient to maintain an overpressure in the vent-
risers even when the cargo is splashing into the vent-
riser and producing a pumping effect.
The Unitor reducer cabinets will be delivered with low
pressure regulators with capacities >80 Nm3/h alternative
>150 Nm 3/h.
The nitrogen system is also designed to give a high
capacity nitrogen flow > 100 Nm 3/h at 7-1 0 bar pressure
for purging of cargo lines and cargo pumps.
The arrangement on deck will typically be one or two
nitrogen main lines 1-2" for cargo padding with manifolds
at each vent.-riser station. The same or a separate
nitrogen line will be branched to each deepwell pump for
nitrogen supply for purging of the pumps and cargo lines.
At each connection to the cargo tanks and to the cargo
handling system, a shut-down valve and a low pressure non-
return valve with a flexible connection will give the
required cargo segregation.
Rules and regulations to be considered.

PROPERTIES
Nitrogen (N2) is a colourless gas, w~thout smell or taste,
slightly lighter than air ( 0. 97). The earth's atmosphere
at sea level consists of 78.03 vol.% nitrogen, 75,5% in
weight. Nitrogen is not poisonous, but suffocating without
any warning when used to reauce the oxy~n content in the
air. It is slightly soluble in water and other liquids,
and has poor properties:for conduction of heat and
electricity.
Nitrogen does not ~gnite, ~d does not support either
combustion or breathing .. ·
Nitrogen acts l.ike a ·"inert" gas towards most materials.
Oxidation symptoms on sol':i.d materials and liquids can be
delayed or completely. stopped in an atmosphere of 100
val. % nitrogen. .. ;
Nitrogen will bind to .some of the more active metals, such
as lithium and magn_esium ·ni.trites. At high temperatures it
will also bind to hydrogen and oxygen as well as other
base elements.
Pure nitrogen is produced industrially in different ways.
Either by rectification (distillation) of liquid air, as a
waste product when producing oxygen, or by straining of
air in a nitrogen generato~.
At cryogenic temperatures ·(;..196°C} nitrogen acts as a
liquid, not magnetiq ~or; to~ic, and doe;.s not create any
irritating vapour. I

APPLICATION
Nitrogen is used t.o 'prevent danger for oxidation,
combustion, explosion or fire. Most nitrogen is used in:
as gas:
- making ~~onia
- pressure testing of systems
- inerting of pipes and tanks
- washing of melted metals (disoxidating)
- covering combustible and explosive materials.
