1. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: The Old Regime of France had a society of estates, which was part of the feudal system
of the middle ages. The members of the first two estates, that is, the clergy and the nobility,
enjoyed certain privileges by birth. The most important of these was the exemption from paying
taxes to the state. The nobles further enjoyed feudal privileges. These included feudal dues, which
they extracted from the peasants, members of the third estate. Peasants were obliged to render
services to the lord – to work in his house and fields – to serve in the army or to participate in
building roads.
2. (d) Both A and R are incorrect
Explanation: To meet the regular expenses such as the cost of maintaining an army, the court, and
running the government offices or universities, the state was forced to increase taxes.
3. (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation: Mirabeau and Abbé Sieyès led the representatives of the third estate who viewed
themselves as spokesmen for the whole French nation. They formed National Assembly and swore
not to disperse till they had drafted a constitution for France that would limit the powers of the
monarch.
Mirabeau was born in a noble family but was convinced of the need to do away with a society of
feudal privilege. He brought out a journal and delivered powerful speeches to the crowds
assembled at Versailles. Abbé Sieyès, originally a priest, wrote an influential pamphlet called ‘What
is the Third Estate’?
4. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Followed by the demolition of Bastille in July 1789, France saw more rioting both in
Paris and the countryside. Most people were protesting against the high price of bread. It was the
beginning of a chain of events that ultimately led to the execution of the king in France, though
most people at the time did not anticipate this outcome.
5. (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation: The Constitution of 1791 vested the power to make laws in the National Assembly,
which was indirectly elected. That is, citizens voted for a group of electors, who in turn chose the
Assembly. Not all citizens, however, had the right to vote. Only men above 25 years of age who paid
taxes equal to at least 3 days of a labourer’s wage were given the status of active citizens, that is,
they were entitled to vote. The remaining men and all women were classed as passive citizens. To
qualify as an elector and then as a member of the Assembly, a man had to belong to the highest
bracket of taxpayers.

accounts for about 2.4 percent of the total geographical area of the world. From it is clear that India
is the seventh-largest country in the world.
7. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: India shares its land boundaries with Pakistan and Afghanistan in the northwest, China
(Tibet), Nepal and Bhutan in the north, and Myanmar and Bangladesh in the east. Both statements
name Indian neighbouring countries in different directions.
8. (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation: It is the other way round, the Indian ocean is named after India because of India's
eminent position in the ocean. No other country has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean as India
has and indeed, it is India’s eminent position in the Indian Ocean, which justifies the naming of an
Ocean after it.
9. (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation: The trans-Indian Ocean routes, which connect the countries of Europe in the West and
the countries of East Asia, provide a strategic central location to India. The assertion is correct but
the reason is incorrect.
10. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: No other country has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean as India has and indeed, it is
India’s eminent position in the Indian Ocean that justifies the naming of an Ocean after it.

11. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: The northern plain has been formed by the interplay of the three major river systems
- the Indus, the Ganga, and the Brahmaputra along with their tributaries. The plain is about 2400
km long and 240 to 320 km broad, and is a densely populated physiographic division. It has a rich
soil cover combined with an adequate water supply and favorable climate it is agriculturally a
productive part of India and so it is densely populated.
12. (d) A is false but R is true.
Explanation: The Himalayas and the Northern Plains are the most recent landforms. The northern
plains are formed of alluvial deposits. The peninsular plateau is composed of igneous and
metamorphic rocks with gently rising hills and wide valleys.
13. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: The Northern part of India is called the "Great Northern Plains" because this area
occupies a large area in North India. It spreads over an area of 7 lakh sq. km. The plain being about
2400 km long and 240 to 320 km broad, is a densely populated physiographic division.
The reason explains the assertion.
14. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: The plains have vast stretches of plain land. In contrast, the hilly region has a rugged
terrain with mountains and valleys are common features.

15. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: The Peninsular Plateau constitutes one of the ancient landmasses on the earth’s
surface. It was supposed to be one of the most stable land blocks. The Himalayas and the Northern
Plains are the most recent landforms. From the viewpoint of geology, the Himalayan mountains
form an unstable zone.

16. (d) A is false but R is true.

Explanation: In a democracy, every citizen must be able to play an equal role in decision-making.
For this, you don’t need just an equal right to vote. From a broader perspective, every citizen needs
to have equal information, basic education, equal resources, and a lot of commitment.
17. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Democracy is all about people and people's participation. Most of the non-democratic
governments would like citizens not to take part in politics. But democracy depends on active
political participation by all the citizens. That is why a study of democracy must focus on democratic
politics.
18. (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation: In a democracy, each adult citizen must have one vote and each vote must have one
value. Fiji refutes this principle because, in Fiji, the vote of an indigenous Fiji has more value than
that of an Indian-Fijian.
The reason is incorrect but the assertion is correct.
19. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: In August 2002 Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf issued a ‘Legal
Framework Order’ that amended the Constitution of Pakistan. According to this Order, the
President can dismiss the national and provincial assemblies.

20. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: No country is a perfect democracy. The features of democracy provide only the
minimum conditions of democracy. That does not make it an ideal democracy. Every democracy
has to try to realize the ideals of democratic decision-making. This cannot be achieved once and for
all. This requires a constant effort to save and strengthen democratic forms of decision-making. An
understanding of democracy as an ideal reminds us of why we value democracy. It enables us to
judge an existing democracy and identify its weaknesses. It helps us to distinguish between a
minimal democracy and a good democracy.

21. (c) A is true but R is false.

Explanation: The Constitution does not reflect the views of its members alone. It expresses a broad
consensus of its time. Many countries of the world have had to rewrite their Constitution
afresh because the basic rules were not acceptable to all major social groups or political parties.
22. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: The Constitution begins with a short statement of its basic values. This is called the
Preamble to the constitution. The Preamble of the Constitution reads like a poem on democracy. It
contains the philosophy on which the entire Constitution has been built. It provides a standard to
examine and evaluate any law and action of government, to find out whether it is good or bad. It is
the soul of the Indian Constitution.
23. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Like any Constitution, the Indian Constitution lays down a procedure for choosing
persons to govern the country. It defines who will have how much power to make which decisions.
And it puts limits on what the government can do by providing some rights to the citizen that
cannot be violated.
24. (d) A is false but R is true.
Explanation: The manner in which the Constituent Assembly worked gives sanctity to the
Constitution. The Constituent Assembly worked in a systematic, open, and consensual manner. At
first, some basic principles were decided and agreed upon. Then a Drafting Committee chaired by
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar prepared a draft constitution for discussion. Several rounds of thorough
discussion took place on the Draft Constitution, clause by clause. More than two thousand
amendments were considered. The members deliberated for 114 days spread over three years.
The assertion is incorrect but the reason is correct.

25. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: The members deliberated for 114 days spread over three years. Every document
presented and every word spoken in the Constituent Assembly has been recorded and preserved.
These are called ‘Constituent Assembly Debates’. When printed, these debates are 12 bulky
volumes! These debates provide the rationale behind every provision of the Constitution. These are
used to interpret the meaning of the Constitution. The reason explains the motive behind
preserving the debates.

fertilizers. Green revolution increases productivity but it is associated with loss of soil fertility. Also,
continuous use of groundwater for tube well irrigation has led to the depletion of the water table.
The assertion is incorrect but the reason is a correct statement.
27. (c) A is true but R is false.

bringing new land under cultivation. In India, there is no dearth of farm labour in the agricultural
sector.
The assertion is correct but the reason is incorrect.
28. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

less irrigation and could grow well using natural fertilizers. They were easily available and were
cheap. The farmers opted for them as all these were readily available with him and he did not have
to spend on hiring modern irrigation systems or purchasing chemical fertilizers.
Both the statements are correct but the reason does not explain the assertion.
29. (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation: There is heavy competition for work among the farm labourers in village Palampur
because people are ready to work for lower wages. The assertion is correct but the reason is wrong.
30. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Chemical fertilizers are not retained in the soil for long. They may escape from the soil
and pollute groundwater, rivers, and lakes. They also kill bacteria and other microorganisms in the
soil, thus making it less fertile. The farmers are forced to use more chemical fertilizers and other
inputs to achieve the same production level.
Both the statements are correct about chemical fertilizer but the reason does not explain the
assertion.
