MISDIAGNOSIS OF MENTAL ILLNESSES: AN

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

WHAT EXACTLY IS MISDIAGNOSIS OF MENTAL ILLNESS?

While people have been taking mental health issues more seriously, there is still not enough
understanding on the topic. Misdiagnosis is an under-examined issue in society, specically in
regards to mental health. People from various backgrounds are subjected to misdiagnosis from
specialists; for example, others may not have severe mental illnesses but are diagnosed with one
(Ayano et al., 2021). In some cases, those who were misdiagnosed were only exhibiting behaviors
that the untrained eyes might categorize as a symptom when it was only due to some current
circumstances that the patient was going through (Shen et al., 2018 & Stahnke, 2021).

There are many ripple effects that a misdiagnosis can have on someone's life due to the
stigmatization, incorrect treatment plans, side effects from medication they should not be taking,
and more. It could cost the healthcare system's nancial security, a person's identity, or even their
lives (McCombs et al., 2007; Bjorklund's, 1998; Ayano et al., 2021). We, The Misdiagnosis Detectives,
will highlight not only where misdiagnosis is most commonly happening in the healthcare eld, but
also examine why people are being misdiagnosed and potential solutions.
