Its main goal is to present essential ideas in a
written piece.

Summary is a brief statement that presents the most
important points of an original material. It helps retell a
story or any material using few statements. It is usually
short and easy to comprehend.
A good summary focuses on the big picture and does not
pay so much attention to minor details. Its main goal is to
present essential ideas in a written piece.
Summary involves putting the main idea of a certain
work into your own words, including only the big picture
or the main idea.
Here are the steps in writing a summary:
1. Identify the topic and the main ideas
Main idea refers to the central point that the author is

text can have one or more central ideas usually
found at the beginning. The details in a particular
text are provided to support the main idea.
2. Locate the most important details (key
points)
Key points present facts, reasons, examples,

Today, the survival of many bat species is
uncertain. Sixty percent of bats do not survive past
infancy. Some are killed by predators such as owls,
hawks, snakes and other meat-eating creatures, but
most are victims of pesticides and other human
intrusions. In Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico, where
there were once eight million bats, there are now a
quarter million. At Eagle Creek, Arizona, the bat
population dropped from thirty million to thirty
thousand in six years. (Dean, D., 2020)
Main idea: Today, the survival of many bat species is
uncertain.
Important details:
1. Bats are being killed by predators.
2. Some are victims of pesticides and human
distractions.
3. The bat population has dropped.
Summary:
At present, it is difficult to tell how long bats would
live. Their number significantly decreased due to
deaths caused by predator attacks, pest sprays and
other harmful human activities.

The ability to write an effective summary might be one of
the most important writing skills you possess. You need
to be able to summarize to be effective at writing

If we look around, it is clearly visible that we are
surrounded by summaries. In fact, great deals of
information we consume every day are summaries. We
may think about the summaries as forms of
advertisements where the purpose is to catch and attract
the attention of us receivers.
