Hello Everyone.
'Fess up time. Sorry, but there were only 9 Easter eggs, because the printer ate one,
but has promised to return it for this issue for you to find!
We were truly blessed with lovely, warm Easter weather this year and I hope you all
got to enjoy it.
Ah May! It is such a lovely month full of verve and vigour. Fresh leaves, new life on
the farm, colourful meadows and roadsides. A positive zing in the air, but we may
need to be aware of that old adage, 'Cast not a clout, 'til May be out! Also, of course,
the month of the Voice Big Plant sale on May 7th. We're hoping it will be warmer
than last year and a bit dryer, but we still had a good time and sold most plants. Also
in this issue of The Voice is the details of the parish's Queen's Platinum Jubilee
celebrations; double page pull-out for you to keep.
Wishing you a Merry, magical May. Gina
Next issue to be collected May 27th. Copy in by May 17th please

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Forty years ago I was excited to be working in my first job after
college - at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. An exciting new
venture had recently started – the World Snooker Championship. At
the Crucible the stage is centrally positioned with seating all around,
making it an ideal venue for both spectators and television cameras. We noticed a
big change in the nature of audiences - now largely composed of people visiting a
theatre for the first time. Bar takings went up massively. The World Championship
was a celebration of the skill and dedication of many genuine popular heroes such
as Alex “Hurricane” Higgins and Ronnie “The Rocket” O'Sullivan, the latter still
playing today.

As in any sport the combination of physical fitness, dedicated practise, mental agility
and strategic thinking make Snooker a compelling spectator sport, but it is the
inherent drama in every frame and the personal dimension – the life stories of the
players and the many challenges they have overcome - that give Snooker it's wide
and enduring appeal. My son Jacob is a number one fan of the game. People can
engage with Snooker on so many levels, from spectating and enjoying the incessant
but informative and amusing punditry to perhaps playing in local leagues. There is a
Snooker Club – “The Maltings” - in King's Lynn and the Village Hall in Great
Massingham has some snooker tables in their Social Club – as I'm sure do many
other venues locally.

The World Snooker Championship is the oldest and the best competition, although
the number of Snooker tournaments now on offer is huge – Jacob tells me that there
is usually a competition on somewhere in the world, especially now that Snooker has
really become popular in China and the Far East.
It is so important that we have sporting (and other) heroes to inspire us. We take our
energy and inspiration from a multitude of people and situations over our lifetime and
our heroes remind us, importantly, that nothing worth doing is achieved lightly; we
may have to make huge sacrifices in order to achieve excellence in sport, our line of
work or in another aspect of life, whatever that may be.
I'm reminded of a verse from my early Sunday school life: “When the one brave
scorer comes to write against your name, he writes not how you've won or lost - but
how you've played the game.” Amen to that.

Have a wonderful flower-filled May, With my love and blessings,

Reverend Judith

Gayton Jubilee Hall
From all of us at the Village Hall we hope that you had a lovely Easter and had long
overdue family catch ups.
We held our Easter Egg hunt and Easter Fayre on Easter Saturday and had a
smashing turn out to both. Thank you to all stall holders and organisers once again.
We had our April meeting at the hall on Wednesday 6th April and we are grateful for
the contribution and support from your Editor Gina and also the Parish Council
liaison, Tim, who also is giving good support and critique to our newly formed
Committee.
Our biggest problem remains our Committee numbers who, to their credit are
pushing on with as much as we physically can.
I would appeal to anyone in the village who might want to help with our Village
activities to either pop along and see Sandi at her weekly Coffee Mornings on
TUESDAYS from 10 till 12, or at the Knit and Natter meetings every WEDNESDAY
from 2 till 4
Or to every reader I offer an Open Invitation to one of our meetings THE FIRST
WEDNESDAY of every month at 6 pm.
The next 2 dates are the 4th May and the 1st June.

That brings us to our plans for Celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee.

Initially we looked at doing something at the Village Hall, but given our numbers and
the fact that at least one of us is away at this time, we welcomed an approach by the
HRH Jubilee Celebration Group to join with them on a very small scale. So we will be
a part of the far bigger celebrations on the weekend of the 4th and 5th June that we
hope you thoroughly enjoy. Some of the things planned are fantastic and I can only
say to you - get involved, pop along to Gayton Hall Grounds, kindly offered up by
Lord Marsham via the intermediary of Alistair Beales.

So a very kind thank you to all involved in the presentation of this weekend.

The Village Hall will be running the Tea, Coffee and soft drinks tent, so maybe you
can use this to approach us about getting involved at the village hall !
Please see pull-out leaflet for more details.
We are looking to extend our Coffee Morning during the fine weather season to
longer hours and hope to offer more refreshments during this time -watch this space

OUR COFFEE MORNINGS ARE ON TUESDAYS 10.00 am to 12 Noon Don't forget

our next meeting is on Wednesday 4 May at 6 pm. Please pop along we are here for the
benefit of the people of Gayton so feel free to be part of our next meeting. Bob Holden

Gayton Profile

My name is Stephen Thrower.

I have lived in the village for most of my life (And what a lovely
village it is too) My Great Grandfather was the first Thrower
here and married the Landlord's daughter of the Crown and is
in the 1891 Census.

When I was 16 I joined the Royal Engineers to get an

Apprenticeship as a bricklayer, but at 21 I was told I had to sign
on for another 6 years for this! Wanting to move on quicker I left
soon after and did my City and Guilds in Norwich.
I have now been laying bricks for over 30 years and have my own apprentice, and
Son that work for me.

I have worked on many large jobs locally including King's Lynn Powerstation,
Morrisons, Matalan, and the Shopping centre also smaller house building sites and
individual houses and extensions I have worked in many cities in England and a
stint in Germany.

Needing a new Challenge, I have used my years of experience and sub-

contractors to start up my own building business in Gayton for the last 5 years.
Most of my work is local and consists of house builds, extensions, down to small
building jobs.
If you have any such building jobs you would like me to quote for please Don't
hesitate to get in touch
Kind Regards Stephen Thrower. See Ad on page 18

A Plea from your Editor.

The axiom that 'If you don't use it, you lose it' is very true. Somethings are simply
superseded, like red telephone boxes and outdoor loos. Over the years, I have been
slowly convinced that a lot of parishioners read the Voice and quite a number of
them are not on social media and don't want to be. So, my plea is to all the groups
and societies in the village to please consider sending in news/articles to The Voice.
I have asked Gayton Estate and the local football club for copy; it is only ½ A5 page
for 10 months of the year. Villagers would love to hear about the Rainbows,
Brownies and Guides on a regular basis. Social media is very transient, but the
Voice is around for over a month, all 1,250+ copies of it. The more local news, the
better. You may not read the Voice yourself, but please consider those who do and
like to keep up with what is happening in the villages. You can just send in notes and
I will put them together; photos are good. We are blessed with wonderful, supportive
advertisers. Thanks to them, also to Racheal at the village school and a couple of
regular contributors. I look forward to hearing from you. editor@tvotv.co.uk. Gina

Gina's Page: a page of fun things

Ham (Red Kidney Bean veg. alt.) and Cheese Croissant

Bake
Ingredients: 2-3 tbsp Dijon mustard. 8 croissants split in half. 8 slices of thick ham
(or a tin of red kidney beans.) 250g Gruyere cheese grated. 4 eggs. 350ml whole
milk. 200ml of single cream. A small bunch of chives chopped.
Method: 1) Spread a thin layer of mustard over each croissant half, then make 8
sandwiches using the ham (red kidney beans, slightly mashed) and Gruyere as the
filling. Whisk the eggs, milk and cream, then season
really well.

2). Butter a 35cm diameter oven-proof dish and arrange

the croissants at the bottom. Pour over the eggy mixture
and leave for 15mins, turning now and again to help it all
soak in. Sprinkle over the chopped chives.

3) Heat the oven to 180c. Bake the croissants for 20-25mins or until the egg mixture
is just set. Scatter with chives before serving. Enjoy.

Andy Parker - Leziate and Ashwicken Parish Council
The Parish Council would like to thank Andy Parker who has resigned as Chair due
to ill health, for his leadership and support for the parish over many years.
Andy brought wisdom and humour to the meetings and will be very much missed.
We all wish him well and a speedy recovery."

Leziate, Ashwicken & Bawsey Women's Institute

We enjoyed belated celebrations at our 77th WI birthday in April, which had been
postponed from January. It involved birthday cake, bingo and members showing off
their creative skills by wearing their decorated Easter Bonnets.
We met the following week to have a sponsored walk from Leziate Village Hall,
raising money for the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW). An
organisation that WIs recognise to support rural women, ensuring the issues they
face are heard and acknowledged by national and international policy makers and
legislators.
Future meetings:
May 17th - Clive Rainbird talking about Diabetes, followed by a Plant Bring & Buy
June 21st - Afternoon Tea at Dobbies
July 19th - Kath Dentten - 'What to do with a Nun's Habit'
We hold our meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at Leziate Village Hall from
2pm -4pm.

This wonderful sunshine has us all outside and windows open, but please be aware
that your taste in music may not be your neighbours! A little bit of consideration goes
a long way. Also enjoy your social time outside in the evening, but please remember
that some parents have little people that need their sleep. I few years ago our
daughter gave us a beautiful wind chime, we love its mellow tinkles, but I thought it
was a bit loud, so asked our neighbours if they could hear it, if so, we would move it,
but they couldn't, so all is well. At our previous home, we had some quite large,
wooden chimes, which were discreetly placed just to catch the breeze, but oh my
goodness, they had to come down when it was really windy! Ed

Compost Corner.

May is a truly lovely month, but a bit tricksy for the gardener. The
greenhouses/cold frames are overflowing and some early set
seeds and plants are desperate to get out in the garden. First, we
have to harden things off so they gradually get acclimatised to
being outside full time. It does help if you can cover a bed or part
of the garden for a few weeks/days to warm up the soil. It really is
a time-consuming month, but already the rewards will be
becoming evident. Watch out for a late frost or two and chilly winds can do an awful
lot of damage, so we still need to be vigilant and look after our plants.
If you haven't already done so, you still have time to set runner beans and a later
crop of carrots and peas. Pot on tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Most varieties
of cucumber need a lot of caring for and mine have been known to keel over at the
11th hour. They hate cold and drafts and like watering and feeding on a regular basis.
If you grow plants/shrubs in tubs, now is a good time to give them a liquid feed like
tomato feed, or seaweed diluted to the manufacturer's spec.
Don't forget the plant fair on May 7th, at St Nicholas Church, Gayton. Everything is
reasonably priced and we look forward to seeing you there. Fleur Potts

Palm Sunday at East Walton
A lovely day was had by all who followed
Jimmy and Timmy into St Mary's Church, East
Walton, on Palm Sunday, as we walked from
the farm to the church and Jimmy and Timmy
joined us for our first hymn.
This was the first time that we have been able
to do this for several years and we look
forward to seeing Jimmy and Timmy again
next year; that's if you can persuade Bill and
Rachel Lewis to bring them.

The Grimston Creative Arts Exhibition is returning.

After a two year gap due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Grimston Creative Arts
Exhibition, organised by Norfolk Creative Arts is returning for its fifth year. The
exhibition is a great way to see local artists work from amateur and professional
alike.
The art ranges from drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture and print.
Each piece is available to buy so its a fab opportunity to purchase an original piece
and support a local artist at the same time.
When: 10am till 4pm daily from the 26th April to the 2nd May

Your Local Cub Pack – 8 King's Lynn (Grimston) Needs Help
Grimston has a successful and vibrant Cub Pack with young people from the
surrounding villages. Our present Cub Leaders, both of whom have given over
twenty-five years' service, plan to step back in July 2023. If we’re not able to replace
them our Cub Pack will be forced to close, we are therefore on the search for
volunteers.
Cubs are aged from 8 to 11 years, they are lively and fun to be with and volunteering
in Scouting is very rewarding, as well as enjoyable. All volunteers are welcome,
experience is not a requirement, training and support will be provided.
If you or anyone you know is interested in this opportunity, please contact:
