LABORATORY MANUAL

Power Generation 1

Synchronizing Generators

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering 4

KNR 3522: Electrical Laboratory II 2016/2017

INTRODUCTION

Generators provide energy for all human beings. A single generator will not
suffice so generators need to be joined to be able to supply the demand of the
country. This experiment shows how generators are joined up. The critical
thing about doing this is to ensure that the frequency and voltage of the two
generators are the same before they are joined.

Objective of the Experiment

1) To synchronize the frequency and voltage of two generators and join them
up electrically.
2) The experiment will enable students to study grid operation with this
miniaturized power grid.

Prior Knowledge

1) Basic electricity
2) Magnetism

Materials and Equipment

1) Two generators (GS1, GS2)

2) Two Motors (M1, M2)
3) AC wave Frequency Synchronizer with synchronizer indicator
4) Two voltmeter one for each generator
5) Two set of On, OFF Switches to join up the three Φ leads of both
generators.
6) EMO (Emergency Stop)
7) Q1 and Q2 MCB to start generator
8) AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator)
9) RPC (Relay Protection Circuit)
10) Power meter (Consumed Power)

METHODOLOGY

A. Precaution

1. If generators are connected without synchronizing them, an explosion will

occur potentially damaging both generators and there is also a possibility
of a fire if the MCCB so not work as planned.
2. No steps in the list can be skipped since this is high power. Consequence
of a mistake is vastly different compared with a incorrect operation a
small electronic chip for example.

B. General Start-up Procedures (Manual)

1. Red connecting wire at External Stop located at right of power generation

panel.
2. Toggle switch at bottom of key to Standby.
3. All black jumpers connected at U1, V1, W1, V2, V2, W2 are connected for
GS1
4. All black jumpers connected at U1, V1, W1, V2, V2, W2 are connected for
GS2.
5. RCD (Eaton Brand) on left of power generation panel switched to OFF
position.
6. Switch ON Grey isolator behind power generation panel.
7. Switch on RCD (Eaton Brand) on left of power generation panel.
8. Switch ON Main Switch (Eaton brand). Press Black button on Main
Switch before toggling up.
9. Toggle below red light switched to Manual position.
10. Switch named Instrument Connection switched to GS2-PB.
11. Turn Key ON near M1 and M2 symbol.
12. Toggle switch below key switch up to RUN.
13. Adjust output voltage to 415V at Adjust Volt knob near GS1 and GS2
symbol.
14. Turn knobs below M1 and M2 symbol to adjust frequency to exactly 50 Hz.
15. Confirm both volt and frequency are the same for both generators.
16. Push Start button next to red light (GS1).
17. Three light L1, L2 and L3 will light up
18. Wait for Synchronizer LED to rotate and turn from red on side to green at
the top.
19. Exactly when green LED is lit up, press Start button on right side of
power generation panel.
20. If any abnormal sound occurs press Red and Yellow Emergency Stop
button.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

1) Write the purpose of each step in the Manual procedure.

2) Write the purpose of each step in the Auto procedure.
3) Discuss and convince your lecturer why each step is necessary and analyse
and give clear reasons why steps can be avoided or simplified.
