Standards 6.EE Apply and extend previous understandings of

arithmetic to algebraic expressions

1. Write and evaluate numerical expressions

involving whole-number exponents

2. Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which

letters stand for numbers.

3. Write expressions that record operations with

numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For

example, express the calculation “Subtract y from 5” as

5–y

Objectives SWBAT Solve algebraic expressions in which letters

stand for numbers

SWBAT Interpret letters in place of numbers

SWBAT Recognize the values of letters in an equation

Reflection

I chose Direct Teaching as my model of effective instruction because I felt it was the

most like me and my current style of teaching. Direct Instruction is based around a structured

and sequenced lesson. I want my lessons to flow and be structured enough to keep students

following along. I chose math because I felt it was the best to demonstrate that sequenced lesson

and it is one of those subjects in which students need structurally. Numerical equations are the

perfect concept to focus direct instruction towards. This lesson starts out with a daily review

followed by an attention getter. Then, is where the teacher will instruct the new concept, ask

questions, and assign practice. The direct instruction works great when teaching a structured

concept such as math. However, it has less room for the creative ability to be used.
