Module 7: Activity No.

Experiment No. 7:

Name: BALITIAN, LORRAINE JOYCE A.

Student No. 20190113178

Question No. 1:

Why the residue in this experiment is incorrectly termed carbon residue?

The amount of carbon produced by a chemical process, such as heating oil, is referred

to as carbon residue. It is primarily regarded as a byproduct of fuel. When gasoline is

burned and used in a motor vehicle engine, it emits carbon monoxide-containing

exhaust. The leftover particles of a fuel product are transformed into carbon residue.

There are tests available to determine how much residue remains after certain fuels are

heated or burned.

Residue is also known as Micro Carbon Residue (MCR) or Conradson Carbon Residue

(CCR) (CCR). Both of these methods are equivalent in the sense that they produce the

same numerical value. A small amount of fuel oil is placed in a glass container for the

test. As the glass is heated within a specific temperature range, the weight is calculated

and subtracted from the weight of the glass prior to heating.

Carbon residues can also be life threatening or poisonous. Exposure to high amounts of

carbon monoxide can lead to brain and cellular damage, including death by

asphyxiation. It is considered to be a pollutant and certain fuels may result in higher

amounts of residue than others. Additives, such as ethanol, may be mixed into certain

types of fuel to reduce the amount of carbon deposits.

Question No. 2:

Why is the rate of heating important in the test?

Residues are typically formed only when

high temperatures are reached by the

fuel oil. The majority of home heating

systems, machinery plants, and vehicles

all use some type of fossil fuel that

produces a residue when heated. Some

engine components may accumulate

carbon deposits over time, which must

be removed on a regular basis in order

to maintain peak performance.

Chemicals like fuel injection cleaners

can aid in the removal of deposits that may be the root cause of engine stalling and

rough starts. Thus, amount or rate of heat in this test is vital.
