Mechanics of Materials
Exam 5
1. A beam has the T-shaped cross section. (a) Determine the value and location of
the maximum tensile normal stresses in the beam. (b) Determine the value and
location of the maximum compressive normal stresses in the beam. (c)
Determine the value and location of the maximum shear stress. You can use
bending moment of 4 kN-m and shear force of 4 kN to calculate the normal
stresses and shear stress with a penalty of 15 points. (45%)
2. A thin strip of steel of length L = 40 in. and thickness t = 0.2 in. is bent by
couples Mo. The deflection δ at the midpoint of the strip, measured from a line
joining its end points, is found to be 0.5 in. Determine the curvature of the strip.
(30%)
3. A hollow wood beam with webs has the cross-sectional dimensions shown in the
figure. The web is attached to the flanges by means of screws. Each screw has an
allowable load in shear of 250 lb. Find the maximum permissible longitudinal
spacing s of the screws if the shear force V is equal to 1200 lb. (30%)
