Mechanics of Materials
Exam 1
1. Briefly explain:
(a) proportional limit; (b) 0.002 strain offset method; (c) inelastic; (d) relaxtion
(5% each)
2. A symmetrical framework consisting of three pin-connected steel bars is loaded
by a force P. The cross section area of the bars is 0.5 in2. The angle α is 50o. The
steel has the stress-strain diagram as shown. The yield stress of the steel is 42 ksi.
The modulus of elastic at linearly elastic part is 30×103 ksi. (a) Determine the
tensile stress in the outer bars if the axial strain in the middle bar is measured as
0.006. (b) For problem (a), determine the value of P; (c) Determine the tensile
stress in the outer bars if the axial strain in the middle bar is measured as 0.002.
(20%) Solution: (a) 42 ksi, (b) 53 kips, (c) 33.9 ksi.

3. A torque To = 10 kN-m is transmitted between two flanged shafts by means of

four 20-mm bolts. The diameter of the bolt circles is d = 120 mm. Determine the
shear stress in the bolts. Disregard friction between the flanges. (20%)
Solution: 133 MPa.

4. A steel pipe of length 40 ft, outside diameter d2 = 6.0 in., and inside diameter d1
= 4.5 in., is compressed by an axial force P = 120 k. The material has modulus of
elasticity E = 30,000 ksi and Poisson’s ration ν = 0.3. Determine: (a) the
shortening of the pipe; (b) the lateral strain ε’; (c) the increase in the wall
thickness. (20%) Solution: (a) 0.155 in, (b) 9.7x10-5, (c) 7.28x10-5 in.

5. A hollow box beam ABC of length L is supported at end A by a 20-mm diameter

pin that passes through the beam and its supporting pedestals. The roller support
at B is located at distance L/3 from end A. The allowable shear stress in the pin is
15 MPa. The allowable bearing stress between the pin and the box beam is 32
MPa if the wall thickness of the beam is equal to 10 mm. Determine the
allowable load P. (20%) Solution: 4712 N.
