Engine

Fact Sheet D9A260, EM-EC96

The D9A260 is a 9.4-litre, straight six-cylinder, 260 hp,

diesel engine, fitted with a turbocharger and an intercooler.
The engine meets EU requirements for exhaust emissions
according to Euro 2.

The D9A260 is based on the same basic concept as the larger

D12D engine, and has an overhead camshaft, four valves per
cylinder, unit injectors, and a fitted cylinder head. The design
is very light.
The engine’s functions are controlled fully electronically by
the Volvo Engine Management System (EMS), which
contributes to low fuel consumption, and low levels of
exhaust emissions. The system also offers advanced capabilities
for diagnosis and fault tracing.
The highly efficient combustion is achieved by the high turbo
charge pressure and the engine’s high compression, combined
with precise and well controlled unit injection.
The transmission is on the flywheel side of the engine, giving
the engine a compact installation and allowing for the
installation of a rear power take-off.
The D9A260 generates high torque at low engine speeds,
resulting in good low speed capacity. This, combined with the
wide engine speed range, gives the engine very good drivea-
bility.
The following product features characterise the D9A260:
• Electronic engine management – EMS – with precise
fuel injection resulting in low fuel consumption and
low exhaust emission levels.
• Electronically controlled fuel injection with centrally
located vertical unit injectors.
• Electronic oil level sensor that provides a reading on
the graphic driver information display.
• Maximum torque in a wide range of engine speeds of-
fers good driving characteristics and low fuel
consumption.
• High engine braking power with VEB*. Power, kW
• Powerful, engine driven, rear-mounted power take-off
for directly running a hydraulic pump or flange. 280 Net output
