PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. This Section covers the furnishing, installation and testing of all the terminal heating
and cooling units in the location and quantities shown on the drawings. The
Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment required to complete
the work.

B. The Contractor shall provide vibration control units, power supply wiring, control
wiring and interlock wiring between equipment units and between equipment and
field-installed control devices.

1.04 REFERENCES

A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever
applicable. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and
processes conforming to one group of codes and standards.

1.05 SUBMITTALS

A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

1. Certificate of compliance stating that the material used for construction of


electric unit heaters conforms to all requirements of this Specification.

2. Certificate of compliance stating that the material used and construction of fan-
coil terminal units conforms to all requirements of this Specification.

3. Submit schedules of equipment and enclosures typically indicating length and


number of pieces of element and enclosure, corner pieces, end caps, cap strips,
access doors, pilaster covers, and comparison of specified heat required to actual
heat output provided.

4. Indicate mechanical and electrical service locations and requirements, specifically


indicating deviations from indicated products.

5. Catalog data including the following information:

a) Unit designation.

b) Dimensions and weight of unit.

c) Heating and cooling capacities at design conditions.

d) Electrical voltage, power, current and control connections and functions.

e) Complete description of materials and methods of construction including


finishes.

f) Installation recommendations.

g) Operation and maintenance manuals, including spare parts list.

6. Shop Drawings of the Proposed Installation:

a) Indicate cross sections of cabinets, grilles, bracing and reinforcing; and


typical elevations.

b) Submit schedules of equipment and enclosures typically indicating


length and number of pieces of element and enclosure, corner pieces,
end caps, cap strips, access doors, pilaster covers, and comparison of
specified heat required to actual heat output provided.

c) Indicate mechanical and electrical service locations and requirements.

7. Project Record Documents

a) Accurately record actual locations of access doors in radiation cabinets


required for access or valving.

8. Samples

a) Submit 1 sample of each radiation cabinet detailed.

9. Manufacturer's Instructions

a) Indicate installation instructions and recommendations.

10. Project Record Documents

a) Record actual locations of components and locations of access doors in


radiation cabinets required for access or valving.

11. Operation and Maintenance Data

a) Include manufacturer’s descriptive literature, operating instructions,


installation instructions, maintenance and repair data, and parts listings.

12. Warranty

a) Submit manufacturer's warranty and ensure forms have been completed


in the Royal Commission’s name and registered with manufacturer.

1.06 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.

B. Terminal heat transfer units shall be product of manufacturer regularly engaged in


production of such units who issues complete catalog data on such products.

C. Qualification of Manufacturer

1. Company specializing in manufacturing the products specified in this Section


with minimum 3 years documented experience.

D. Qualification of Installer

1. The Contractor shall employ an adequate number of skilled workmen who are
thoroughly trained and experienced in the necessary works and who are
completely familiar with the specified requirements and the methods needed
for proper performance of work. Contractor’s site supervisor(s) shall have
knowledge of referenced standards and at least 3 years of documented
experience.

E. Contractor’s internal quality control shall include but not be limited to:

1. Checking certificates of compliance to conform to specification and referenced


standards prior to installation.

2. Checking supplier’s delivery tickets of each delivery for completeness and with
supply order and specification.

1.07 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Royal Commission Regulations

a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

3. Contractor

a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal


Commission.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be
employed throughout.

1.08 DESIGN CRITERIA

A. Cooling Systems

1. Refer to SECTION 15730.

B. Heating Systems

1. Maintain required design condition spaces by supplying heat adequate to


offset heat loss.

2. Provide adequate reserve capacity for morning warm up. Sources may be hot

water or electricity.

3. Gas fired heating systems shall have output-to-input energy efficiency ratings
of not less than 80% at full loading.

C. Where hydronic distribution systems are used, the following separate zones shall be
provided where applicable combination of zones shall be subject to the Royal
Commission approval.

1. Perimeter heating.

2. Terminal reheat and duct heating.

3. Air handling unit heating, unit heaters and convectors.

4. Air handling unit preheat.

5. Energy heat recovery run around loop.

D. Each zone shall be provided with, at a minimum, a separate circulating pump with
standby capability and temperature reset controls.

E. Perimeter Heating System

1. Since control between interior and exterior spaces may cause lack of comfort
as seasons change, provide a perimeter heating system for skin load only.

2. Provide individual zones of control based upon building exposures and


building component thermal characteristics.

3. The design shall provide perimeter heat below every window or glazing
element used in the perimeter building envelope.

F. Terminal Reheat and Duct Heating

1. For system of appreciable size, as coordinated with the Royal Commission, a


separate heating source shall be considered.

G. Air Handling Unit Heating, Unit Heaters and Convectors

1. Where there is no air handling unit heating coil, unit heaters and convectors
shall be combined with another zone as coordinated with the Royal
Commission.

H. Insulation

1. Where heated areas have floors exposed to the outside temperatures,


coordinate with the Royal Commission to provide sufficient insulation on the
underside of the floor to maintain comfort conditions.

1.09 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:

1. All products shall be delivered in manufacturer's original, protective packaging.

2. All products shall be inspected at time of delivery for damage and for
compliance with specifications.

3. Any products that are damaged or found not to be in accordance with the
specifications shall be immediately repaired or replaced.

4. All products shall be handled and stored as recommended by the


manufacturer to prevent damage and deterioration.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

B. All internal components shall be factory wired for one single-point power connection.

2.02 CHILLED WATER COOLING COILS

A. Extended Surface Type Coils

1. Copper Tubes

a) Minimum Thickness: 0.5 mm (0.020 in.).

b) Outside diameter, 15.9 mm (5/8 in.).

2. Plate Fins of Copper

a) Minimum Thickness: 0.2 mm (0.008 in.).

B. Rows and Fin Spacing

1. To meet performance scheduled at similar or lower pressure drop.

2. Selected with tube fouling factor of 0.001.

3. Maximum Fins: 14 per inch.

4. Select to avoid moisture carryover.

C. Face Velocity and Pressure Drops

1. Face velocity for chilled water cooling coils shall not exceed 2.5 m/s
(500 ft/min).

2. Coil airside pressure drop based on a wet coil shall not exceed 249 Pa
(1 in. wg.) at design air flow conditions.

3. Coil waterside pressure drop shall not exceed 95 kPa (15 ft. wg.) at design
water flow.

D. Circuiting

1. Full row.

E. Headers

1. Copper tubing or cast iron.

1. Refer to SECTION 15730 for cooling capacity basis for cooling terminal units.

2.03 MAIN HOT WATER HEATING COILS

A. Extended Surface Type Coils

1. Copper Tubes

a) Minimum Thickness: 0.5 mm (0.020 in.).

b) Outside Diameter: 15.9 mm (5/8 in.).

2. Plate Fins of Copper

a) Minimum Thickness: 0.2 mm (0.008 in.).

B. Rows and Fin Spacing

1. To meet performance scheduled at similar or lower pressure drop.

3. Coil waterside pressure drop shall not exceed 47.5 kPa (6 ft. wg.) at design
water flow.

2.04 ZONE TERMINAL HOT WATER REHEAT COILS

A. Tubes and Fins

b) Outside diameter, 12.5 or 15.9 mm (½ or 5/8 in.).

2. Aluminum Fins

a) With full fin collars.

b) Minimum Thickness: 0.2 mm (0.008 in.).

B. Rows and Fin Spacing

1. One or two row as required to meet performance scheduled at similar or lower


pressure drop.

2. Selected with tube fouling factor of 0.001.

3. Maximum Fins: 10 per inch.

C. Face Velocity and Pressure Drops

1. Coil airside pressure drop shall not exceed 75 Pa (0.3 in. wg.) at design air
flow conditions.

2. Coil waterside pressure drop shall not exceed 24 kPa (3 ft. wg.) at design
water flow.

2.05 BASEBOARD RADIATION

A. Heating Elements

1. 20 mm (¾ in.) ID copper tubing mechanically expanded into flanged collars of


evenly spaced aluminum fins, one tube end belled.

B. Enclosure

1. Minimum 0.75 mm (0.030 in.) steel with 175 mm (7 in.) high back and top of
1 piece; front panel, end panel, end caps, corners, and joiner pieces to snap
together, with front panel easily removable. Provide full length damper.

C. Finish

1. Factory applied baked enamel of color.

D. Element Brackets

1. 1.3 mm (0.0516 in.) galvanized steel to support from panel and noise free
element cradle.

E. Capacity

1. As scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 82°C (180°F)


average water temperature.

2. As scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 6.9 kPa (1 psi)
steam.

3. The basis for capacities of terminal heating units shall not be limited to those
values shown. Air entering temperatures and average water temperatures
other than those shall be considered too.

2.06 FINNED TUBE RADIATION

A. Heating Elements

1. 20 mm (¾ in.) ID seamless copper tubing, mechanically expanded into evenly


spaced aluminum fins sized 100 x 100 mm (4 x 4 in.), suitable for soldered
fittings.

B. Fins shall be securely fastened to the pipe by means of internal expansion of the

pipe. Minimum fin thickness shall be 0.813 mm (0.032 in.). Elements shall be one or
two row as required to develop necessary capacities.

C. Element Hangers

1. Quiet operating, ball bearing cradle type providing unrestricted longitudinal


movement, on enclosure brackets.

D. Enclosures

1. 1.2 mm (0.0478 in.) zinc coated bonderized steel up to 450 mm (18 in.) in
height, 1.5 mm (0.0598 in.) steel over 450 mm (18 in.) in height or aluminum
as detailed, with easily jointed components for wall to wall installation.

E. Enclosure sections shall be joined by a reinforced slip joint designed to provide sheet
metal edge to edge jointing. Enclosure shall be complete with full backplate,
adjustable ball bearing brackets and element cradles, matching inside and outside
corners, end enclosures, and end trim pieces shall be furnished as required.
Enclosures shall be finished with baked-on enamel in one of the manufacturer's
standard colors.

1. Support rigidly, on wall or floor mounted brackets.

2. Support rigidly, on wall or floor mounted brackets at least 1000 mm (3 ft.) on


center maximum.

F. Finish

1. Factory applied baked primer coat.

G. Damper

1. Where not thermostatically controlled, provide knob-operated internal damper


at enclosure air outlet.

H. Access Doors

1. For otherwise inaccessible valves, provide factory-made permanently hinged


access doors, 150 x 175 mm (6 x 7 in.) minimum size, integral with cabinet.

I. Capacity

1. As scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 82°C (180°F)


average water temperature.

2. As scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 6.9 kPa (1 psi)
steam.

3. The basis for capacities of terminal heating units shall not be limited to those
values shown. Air entering temperatures and average water temperatures
other than those shall be considered too.

2.07 CONVECTORS

A. Heating Elements

1. Seamless copper tubing mechanically expanded into evenly spaced aluminum


fins and cast iron headers, steel side plates and supports, factory air pressure
tested at 690 kPa (100 psi) under water, with means of adjusting pitch of
element. Tubing shall be brazed to bronze or heavy wall steel headers. Fin
and tube assembly shall be encased in a steel frame with intermediate
supports. Element hangers shall provide at least 25 mm (1 in.) of height and
pitch adjustment at each end.

B. Cabinet

1. 1.5 mm (0.0598 in.) phosphatized steel with baked on enamel finish front and
top, 1.2 mm (0.0478 in.) phosphatized steel back and ends; exposed corners
rounded; easily secured removable front panels, adequately braced and
reinforced for stiffness. Grilles shall be die-formed with directional louvers.
Front panels shall be removable without disturbing the paint seal.

C. Finish

1. Factory applied baked primer coat.

D. Damper

1. Where not thermostatically controlled, provide knob-operated internal damper


at enclosure air outlet.

E. Access Doors

1. For otherwise inaccessible valves, provide factory-made permanently hinged


access doors, 150 x 175 mm (6 x 7 in.) minimum size, integral with cabinet.

F. Capacity

1. As scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 82°C (180°F)


average water temperature.

2. As scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 6.9 kPa (1 psi)
steam.

3. The basis for capacities of terminal heating units shall not be limited to those
values shown. Air entering temperatures and average water temperatures
other than those shall also be considered.

2.08 UNIT HEATERS

A. Unit heaters shall consist of a finned heating element, direct driven propeller fan and
motor, and adjustable discharge louvers, enclosed in a steel casing.

B. Coils

1. Seamless copper tubing, silver brazed to steel headers, and with evenly
spaced aluminum fins mechanically bonded to tubing.

C. Casing

1. 1.2 mm (0.0478 in.) phosphatized steel reinforced at all mounting points, and
finished in baked-on enamel. Discharge louvers shall provide both horizontal
and vertical air throw adjustments, with threaded pipe connections for hanger
rods.

D. Finish

1. Factory applied baked primer coat.

E. Fan

1. Direct drive propeller type, statically and dynamically balanced, with fan guard;
horizontal models with permanently lubricated sleeve bearings; vertical models
with grease lubricated ball bearings.

F. Air Outlet

1. Adjustable pattern diffuser on projection models and two way louvers on


horizontal throw models.

G. Motor

1. Permanently lubricated sleeve bearings on horizontal models, grease


lubricated ball bearings on vertical models.

H. Control

1. Local multi-speed disconnect switch.

I. Capacity

1. As scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 82°C (180°F)


average water temperature.

2. As scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 6.9 kPa (1 psi)
steam.

3. The basis for capacities of terminal heating units shall not be limited to those
values shown. Air entering temperatures and average water temperatures
other than those shall be considered too.

2.09 CABINET UNIT HEATERS

A. Coils

1. Evenly spaced aluminum fins mechanically bonded to copper tubes, designed


for 1380 kPa (100 psi) and 104°C (220°F).

B. Cabinet

1. 1.5 mm (0.0598 in.) steel with exposed corners and edges rounded, easily
removed panels, glass fiber insulation and integral air outlet.

C. Finish

1. Factory applied baked primer coat on visible surfaces of enclosure or cabinet.

D. Fans

1. Centrifugal forward-curved double-width wheels, statically and dynamically


balanced, direct driven.

E. Motor

1. Tap wound multiple speed permanent split capacitor with sleeve bearings,
resiliently mounted.

F. Control

1. Multiple speed switch, factory wired, located in cabinet.

G. Filter

1. Easily removed 25 mm (1 in.) thick glass fiber throw-away type, located to filter
air before coil.

H. Mixing Dampers

1. Where indicated, mixing sections with dampers.

I. Capacity

1. As Scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 82°C (180°F)


average water temperature.

2. As Scheduled, based on 18°C (65°F) entering air temperature, 6.9 kPa (1 psi)
steam.

3. The basis for capacities of terminal heating units shall not be limited to those
values shown. Air entering temperatures and average water temperatures
other than those shall also be considered.

2.10 FAN COIL UNITS

A. Fan-coil units shall consist of a finned heating coil, chilled water cooling coil,
condensate drain pan, direct driven centrifugal fans, filters, and controls, enclosed in
a decorative steel cabinet.

B. Coils

1. Evenly spaced aluminum fins mechanically bonded to copper tubes, designed


for 1380 kPa (200 psi) and 104°C (220°F). Provide drain pan under cooling

2.11 UNIT VENTILATORS

A. Coils

1. Copper tubes mechanically expanded into evenly spaced aluminum fins tested
to operate at 1034 kPa (150 psi). Provide drain pan under cooling coil, easily
removable for cleaning, with drain connection.

B. Electric Heating Coil

1. Enclosed copper tube, aluminum finned element of coiled nickel-chrome


resistance wire centered in tubes and embedded in refractory material.

C. Cabinet

1. Enclosure

a) 1.9 mm (0.0747 in.) steel on solid base pan with exposed edges
rounded. Provide removable front panels with quick-acting, key-
operated cam locks. Provide removable die-cast or fabricated steel
discharge grilles. For units having cooling coils, insulate internal parts
and surfaces exposed to conditioned air stream with moisture resistant
insulation.

D. Cabinet Accessories

1. Matching steel construction, reinforced, for use with unit ventilators or finned
radiation, with steel alignment pins, adjustable kick plates with leveling bolts,
shelves and sliding doors with locks as indicated, sinks, bubbler faucets and
bowls, corner, end, and wall filler sections as required.

E. Finish

a) Pipe Coil
1) Incorporate extruded void into which continuous 15 mm (½ in.)
copper pipe is rolled and thermally bonded. Provide return bends
for two water connections to each panel.

b) Where indicated, incorporate extruded drapery track.

c) Cross brace entire assembly with structural members and insulate with
25 mm (1 in.) thick fiberglass insulation. Configure panels within T-bar
ceiling module and run wall to wall.

2.13 INDUCTION UNITS

A. Base Unit Casing

1. 1 mm (0.0396 in.) galvanized steel.

2. Include acoustically insulated primary air plenum, primary air inlets, internal air
damper, induction nozzles, water coil, lint screen, and drain pan in base units.

3. Provide interchangeable transition pieces or plugs for single or series hook up.

4. Spot weld and seal joints in base unit.

5. Paint portion of unit visible through discharge opening with flat black enamel.

6. Provide internal primary air damper of multiple orifice design manually

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION

A. The Contractor shall inspect all products for damage immediately before installation.
Any products that are damaged or not in accordance with the specifications shall
immediately be repaired or removed from the site and replaced.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Install equipment exposed to finished areas after walls and ceiling are finished and
painted. Do not damage equipment or finishes.

C. Protection

1. Provide finished cabinet units with protective covers during balance of


construction.

D. Baseboard Radiation

1. Locate on outside walls and run cover continuously wall-to-wall unless


otherwise indicated. Center elements under windows. Where multiple windows
occur over units, divide element into equal segments centered under each
window. Install end caps where units butt against walls.

E. Finned Tube Radiation

1. Locate on outside walls and run cover wall-to-wall unless otherwise indicated.
Center elements under windows. Where multiple windows occur over units,
divide element into equal segments centered under each window. Align
cabinet joints with window mullions. Install wall angles where units butt against
walls.

F. Convectors

1. Install where indicated. Coordinate to assure correct recess size for recessed
convectors.

G. Unit Heaters

1. Hang from building structure, with pipe hangers anchored to building, not from
piping. Mount as high as possible to maintain greatest headroom unless
otherwise indicated.

H. Cabinet Unit Heaters

1. Install as indicated. Coordinate to assure correct recess size for recessed


units.

I. Fan-Coil Units

1. Install as indicated. Coordinate to assure correct recess size for recessed

J. Unit Ventilators

1. Locate as indicated, level and shim units, and anchor to structure. Coordinate
exact location of wall louvers. Install shelving and auxiliary cabinetry. Provide
wall trim pieces for continuous wall-to-wall installation.

K. Induction Units

1. Support base units from continuous wall mounting strip or wall mounting
brackets. Support cabinet enclosures from wall mounting strip or attach direct
to wall and floor.

L. Hydronic Units

1. Provide with shut-off valve on supply and lockshield balancing valve on return
piping. If not easily accessible, extend vent to exterior surface of cabinet for
easy servicing. For cabinet unit heaters, fan coil units, and unit heaters,
provide float operated automatic air vents with stop valve.

M. Units with Cooling Coils

1. Connect drain pan to condensate drain.

N. Install electric heating equipment including devices furnished by manufacturer but not
factory-mounted. Furnish copy of manufacturer's wiring diagram submittal. Install
electrical wiring in accordance with manufacturer's submittals.

3.03 FIELD TESTING

A. All equipment circuits and devices shall be service tested to demonstrate proper
operation. Each item of control equipment shall be tested not less than 5 times.

3.04 CLEANING

A. After construction is completed, including painting, clean exposed surfaces of units.


Vacuum clean coils and inside of cabinets.

B. Touch-up marred or scratched surfaces of factory-finished cabinets, using finish


materials furnished by manufacturer.

C. Install new filters.
