THE IMPACT OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD MOTIVATION

TECHNIQUES ON STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE

A Critical Review
By Naufal Siddiqi Nasrullah

INTRODUCTION
The present paper is a critical review on a research article “The Impact Of
Prophet Muhammad Motivation Techniques on Students’ Performance” by Wan
Mazwati Wan Yusoff from Department of General Studies, Kulliyyah of Islamic
Revealed Knowledge, International Islamic University Malaysia, Jalan Gombak,
53100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The research article is published on Procedia -
Social and Behavioral Sciences 69 ( 2012 ) pages 1700 – 1708. This article aims to
create techniques similar to those used by Prophet Muhammad to motivate
students to perform better.

SUMMARY OF THE ARTICLE

In the introduction, the writers set out the disparity between a student's real
ability and academic performance is commonly used to determine low
achievement. Low achievement in Malaysian is indicated by the previous year's
school examination, because ability grouping is still widespread in Malaysian
schools, low achievers are grouped together in classes that are ranked as the last
classes. This behavior, which is similar to labeling, lowers self-esteem. Several
studies have found a link between low achievement and low motivation, self-
esteem, and academic self-concept.
The fact that Prophet Muhammad was a perfect man, as well as the Quran's
encouragement to emulate his life, are the primary motivations for this research.
The writers attempted to investigate and examine the prophet's authentic hadist in
order to discover the prophet's method in motivating his companions to behave
better. Other than investigating the relevance of ancient methods in modern times,
the purpose of this study was to develop motivational techniques based on the
examination and analysis of authentic hadiths, and to identify the effects of these
motivation techniques on low achievers' behavior and academic performance.
The method used by the writers is qualitative research method to create
motivational approaches based on a careful and critical investigation of authentic
hadiths. First, the writers selected several relevant hadist from Collection of
Authentic Hadist by Imam Al-Bukhari, Abridged Collection of Authentic Hadist
by Imam Muslim, Sunan Abu Daud, and Sunan Tarmizi. 45 hadiths were chosen
and examined from thousands of other hadiths. However for the present study, the
writers only selected 10 hadist to be most applicable in educational psychology,
particularly in motivation. Students with low achievement from a public school on
the outskirts of a large city in the state of Perak were the participants in this study.
Participants were reported as having trouble focusing during teaching and learning
sessions, as well as having a low academic self-concept, low self-esteem, and low
willingness to study. In the topic of Malay Language, the teacher used Prophet
Muhammad's motivational techniques. Malay Language is an essential subject for
the national test (SPM), because failing it means failing the national exam.
The information gathered in the first phase showed the analysis of the
selected authentic hadiths, 10 motivation techniques were developed based on the
selected 10 hadiths. Moreover, the writers explained how the Prophet motivation
techniques are implemented in the classroom. The data were analyzed to ensure
that the intervention program was implemented in accordance with the researcher's
developed motivation techniques. When the new school year began, the teacher
began by asking questions to which all students responded by raising their hands.
The teacher should make sure that the questions she asks are about behavioural
conduct, and that she is certain that all of the children have done so. The teachers
always give positive words and encourage their students instead of judging their
mistakes. And so many other behaviours that the researchers gave in the present
study.
Several necessary components and were named as a result of the data
analysis. Students' drive to study, task interest, collaborative learning, academic
self-concept, self-confidence, and disruptive behavior have all improved
significantly. The initial assessment took place in March of 2012. The exam
demonstrated a significant improvement in student achievement, with no student
receiving less than a ten percent grade; the lowest grade received was 27 percent.
A total of 24% of the pupils received a C mark, while 7% received a B grade.
behavior and performance did not transfer to other subject matters taught by other
teachers. However, the students showed improvement in respecting other teachers
as well.

CRITICAL COMMENT
Motivation is defined as a person's attempt to complete his or her
responsibilities, including devoting the necessary effort and maintaining it.
Learners' motivation is reflected in their academic task selections, the time and
effort they devote to each assignment, and their persistence in completing
academic activities.
Motivation also allows individuals to deal well with the challenges they face
during the learning process (Auwalu, Norsuhaily, Sadiq, Halabi 2015).
There are numerous of techniques for enhancing student motivation.
Furthermore, the techniques from prophet Muhammad Peace be upon Him is still
relevant in this era. Several authentic hadiths are being concerned more on the
present research.
According to the present research, technique of giving reward by the
prophet is hadith from The Abridged Collection of Imam Muslim Authentic
Hadith. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever intends to perform a good
deed but does not do it, then Allah will record it as a complete good deed. If he
intends to do it and does so, then Allah the Exalted will record it as ten good deeds
up to seven hundred times as much or even more. If he intends to do a bad deed
and does not do it, then Allah will record for him one complete good deed. If he
does it then Allah will record for him a single bad deed (Nawawi, Hadith 37, p. 40,
1250) . Receiving a reward after finishing a work reinforces our learning process,
according to this hadith's idea. The reasoning of a motivational reward should be
applied correctly after a task has been finished. If the completed project was
societal, it should be made public. It is essential to avoid from criticizing an
assignment that has been completed incorrectly (Nieto, 2020, para. 6). Mazwati,
Yusoff (2012) reported that reward is given when task was done correctly when
the task was done in public, then, reward is given in public, the reward given is
social reward those who did the task wrongly is not criticized.
This technique is really effective to increase student’s motivation,
particularly the intrinsic motivation in Self-determination theory (SDT). Self-
determination theory (SDT) is a helpful method for comprehending motivation.
(Komar, Chow, Kawabata, Yi Choo, 2022). Self-determination theory (SDT) is an
empirically based, organismic theory of human behavior and personality
development. SDT’s analysis is focused primarily at the psychological level, and it
differentiates types of motivation along a continuum from controlled to
autonomous.
(Ryan, Deci, 2017, p. 3). Thus, SDT is the implementation of prophet Muhammad
Peace be upon Him motivational technique that has meaningful impact on
student’s performance. Ryan and Deci, (2017) reported that as evidenced by SDT,
proximal social circumstances have a significant impact on motivation, behavior,
and experience, with adequately manage by basic psychological need satisfactions
and frustrations.
CONCLUSION
This research identified solutions to the problem of low-achieving students. The
researchers researched and evaluated data gathered from hadiths to develop
strategies to motivate low-achieving students, which is in line with IIUM's
objective. The approaches developed were put to the test on 28 low achievers. The
findings of this study show that the methods used by Prophet Muhammad to
motivate his companions 1500 years ago are still effective and relevant in this era.
