A Critical Review
By Naufal Siddiqi Nasrullah
INTRODUCTION
The present paper is a critical review on a research article “The Impact Of
Prophet Muhammad Motivation Techniques on Students’ Performance” by Wan
Mazwati Wan Yusoff from Department of General Studies, Kulliyyah of Islamic
Revealed Knowledge, International Islamic University Malaysia, Jalan Gombak,
53100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The research article is published on Procedia -
Social and Behavioral Sciences 69 ( 2012 ) pages 1700 – 1708. This article aims to
create techniques similar to those used by Prophet Muhammad to motivate
students to perform better.
CRITICAL COMMENT
Motivation is defined as a person's attempt to complete his or her
responsibilities, including devoting the necessary effort and maintaining it.
Learners' motivation is reflected in their academic task selections, the time and
effort they devote to each assignment, and their persistence in completing
academic activities.
Motivation also allows individuals to deal well with the challenges they face
during the learning process (Auwalu, Norsuhaily, Sadiq, Halabi 2015).
There are numerous of techniques for enhancing student motivation.
Furthermore, the techniques from prophet Muhammad Peace be upon Him is still
relevant in this era. Several authentic hadiths are being concerned more on the
present research.
According to the present research, technique of giving reward by the
prophet is hadith from The Abridged Collection of Imam Muslim Authentic
Hadith. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever intends to perform a good
deed but does not do it, then Allah will record it as a complete good deed. If he
intends to do it and does so, then Allah the Exalted will record it as ten good deeds
up to seven hundred times as much or even more. If he intends to do a bad deed
and does not do it, then Allah will record for him one complete good deed. If he
does it then Allah will record for him a single bad deed (Nawawi, Hadith 37, p. 40,
1250) . Receiving a reward after finishing a work reinforces our learning process,
according to this hadith's idea. The reasoning of a motivational reward should be
applied correctly after a task has been finished. If the completed project was
societal, it should be made public. It is essential to avoid from criticizing an
assignment that has been completed incorrectly (Nieto, 2020, para. 6). Mazwati,
Yusoff (2012) reported that reward is given when task was done correctly when
the task was done in public, then, reward is given in public, the reward given is
social reward those who did the task wrongly is not criticized.
This technique is really effective to increase student’s motivation,
particularly the intrinsic motivation in Self-determination theory (SDT). Self-
determination theory (SDT) is a helpful method for comprehending motivation.
(Komar, Chow, Kawabata, Yi Choo, 2022). Self-determination theory (SDT) is an
empirically based, organismic theory of human behavior and personality
development. SDT’s analysis is focused primarily at the psychological level, and it
differentiates types of motivation along a continuum from controlled to
autonomous.
(Ryan, Deci, 2017, p. 3). Thus, SDT is the implementation of prophet Muhammad
Peace be upon Him motivational technique that has meaningful impact on
student’s performance. Ryan and Deci, (2017) reported that as evidenced by SDT,
proximal social circumstances have a significant impact on motivation, behavior,
and experience, with adequately manage by basic psychological need satisfactions
and frustrations.
CONCLUSION
This research identified solutions to the problem of low-achieving students. The
researchers researched and evaluated data gathered from hadiths to develop
strategies to motivate low-achieving students, which is in line with IIUM's
objective. The approaches developed were put to the test on 28 low achievers. The
findings of this study show that the methods used by Prophet Muhammad to
motivate his companions 1500 years ago are still effective and relevant in this era.
