I. Describe the Class

This class is a sophomore American history class. There are 6 different periods, consisting of

about 25 to 31 students. Each class has at least two students with learning disabilities and the

most a class has is 6. There are 2 ELL students in 2 different classes. There is a bell schedule, so

each period is 1 hour and 30 minutes and occurs every other weekday.

II. Objective(s)

1. Knowledge: Students will be able to take notes and identify what they just learned in the

lesson.

2. Comprehension: After watching and listening to the video and power point presentation,

students will be able to summarize what happened when the pilgrims arrived in the

Americas and what happened during their first couple years of living alongside the

Natives.

3. Application: Students will be able to demonstrate what their current knowledge about the

first Thanksgiving is by answering 2 questions.

4. Analysis: Students will be able to examine their notes as well as the power point

presentation to help them with future assignments or go over what they did not

understand.

5. Synthesis: While viewing and listening to the presentation, students will create their own

method of taking notes that work best for them.

6. Evaluation: After writing notes, students will judge the events of Thanksgiving.

III. Procedures

1. Students will walk in and pick up a card. On the board at the front of the class there will

be a question that reads “Do you know what happened at the first Thanksgiving? If yes,
what happened? If not, what do you think happened?” Students will be given the first 5

minutes of class to answer these questions on their own.

2. After five minutes have passed, I will take about 2 minutes to introduce the subject by

telling the class that we will be learning about the Europeans who arrived in the Americas

and lived alongside the Native Americans.

3. I will show a 10-minute educational video about this subject. Students may take notes

while watching the video.

4. Once the video is over, I will show a power point presentation explaining how the

Europeans arrived in the Americas in three different ships and how they lived alongside

the Native Americans. I will also go into further detail about what happened on the first

Thanksgiving and what happened after. This will take about 30 minutes. The power point

includes pictures as well as short descriptions of what I am saying.

5. Students will write notes in their notebooks. If they wish to take more notes or see other

material, they may have their textbook with them to read from.

6. For 5 minutes, on the back of the card, students will write how their view of the first

Thanksgiving has changed

V. Grouping Structures
Students sit at tables of four. The seating chart is randomly selected. For this lesson, students

will work quietly and on their own.

VI. Modifications

All students have a laptop with them. The power point is shared with them so they can go back

and students who are gifted may go forward and read on their own. Students with learning

disabilities will have a teaching assistant to assist them if they need. The video will have Spanish

captions for the students with disabilities. I will have Spanish speaking student at their table to

assist them is needed and I can also translate anything that is needed.

VII. Assessment

Students will leave their notes on the table, and I will go around each table to stamp the ones that

completed them. Students will receive a stamp if the notes are neat and have at least half a page

written. While I am doing this, students will be writing on their card and will turn it in for a
