Farallones Coffee Wet Mill
Ciudad Bolívar, Colombia
Coffee production has a long tradition within the Colombian
economy. Building an economically successful community
coffee wet mill required that the project respect all shared
interests of not only the company, but also the different affiliates
of the cooperative and their biggest client. The project is a joint
venture between a cooperative and Colombia’s largest coffee
company: Farallones.
Located 75 km southwest from Medellín, the mill is 1.2 m above
sea level, in a typical region for coffee production. Production
of coffee requires a step-by-step process: peeling the cherry,
fermenting the nut in water for 8 to 12 hours, and then drying
the nut either in the sun or by artificial heat. Then the nut is
ready for roasting, a process that takes place at a different facility.
The building is 65×35 m, essentially a box of red GRC panels
that resist the humidity in the interior produced by the drying
process and an echo of the oxidized metal panels typical of this
kind of vernacular infrastructure. Divided into 3 strata, the
façade has interesting characteristics. The bottom layer has
some engravings related to the typical iconography of the area,
taken from The Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones, which
the gold-mining engineers brought with them 150 years ago and
adapted to decorate climate panels of the period. The second
layer has smaller panels slightly inclined to allow cold air to
come through. And on the topmost layer, the bigger panels have
diamond figure holes to allow hot air to exit.
The building mixes 2 typologies in a single solution, a factory (the
wet mill process) and a small community center for the affiliates
to receive training, and kids to attend educational programs.

The starting point for designing NIDO was to question the
regulations for building in the central mountain range
of Antioquia. Although the site is rich in hydrology, pine
plantations, and native forests, the environmental corporation
Cornare characterized the lot as useless, covering less than
5,000 m2 and set in steep slopes and mixed forest. These
conditions are very common for the territory and reflect the
inappropriate regulations for the prevailing reality. Colombia’s
tropical region is generous in these humid forests, so it
is imperative to find sensitive typologies for harmonious
coexistence with the landscape’s great natural wealth.
To achieve only minimum contact with the ground and only
the slightest modifications to the terrain, and out of respect for
the existing vegetation, the structure uses deep cantilevers. This
habitable “furniture” stands on 8 piles of 30 cms in diameter,
with a contact area of only 56 m2 for a projected area of 76 m2
so the volume appears to almost levitate above the site.
To achieve a compact 58 m2 flexible interior that accommodates
family life and its daily rituals, the structure presents a simple
grid with a complex section. Its basic roof typologies include the
vault, the one-pitched, gabled, flat, and multi-pitched roof. The
section of the Nest, where we inhabit, provided a design precept
for the project.
Through a concept of double reality, the radical dark and opaque
exterior is camouflaged in the landscape and contrasts with the
warm, golden wood interior – ideal for a climate that oscillates
between 7 and 15°C.
The generous multiple heights obey a diaphragm of loads and
tensions of the shell-like structure. Blurring the typology of a
house, the resulting shape presents aerodynamic lines typical of
aviation, navigation, and automotive design. The metal decks
seem to be scraping the wind while the sun’s rays touch the
ground, nurturing the vegetation.

An initiative of the Colombian design studio El Equipo Mazzanti
and Odinsa, a Colombian construction and infrastructure
company, proposed that the Colombian state establish a new
infrastructure for communications and road operations. The
country’s control and operations centers (CCOs) usually served
only as buildings connected to the highways and their operation,
however this plan shifted them from structures designed purely
for efficiency to places of community support with classrooms, a
product collection center, a market square for the products of the
region, and both an outdoor cinema and sports fields. The project
thus served as a seed for the Colombian government to convert all
CCOs to community centers in the rural regions of Colombia. All
new highways in Colombia must now include community centers
in accordance with the cultural and climatic characteristics of the
regions through which they pass.
A CCO is a road service center, a meeting place where travelers
can not only rest but also enjoy recreation and learn about the
area’s tourist attractions. The idea is to have a high social impact
at a regional level, to make the CCO a recognizable local urban
landmark that promotes La Pintada as a travel destination, a
seaside resort for visitors to Medellín.
With its central objective of designing a social architecture
capable of providing flexibility and diversity of use, the project
highlights the most representative elements and materials
of Antioquia colonial architecture and the region’s various
construction traditions. An elevated floating wooden box with a
particular structure under a light canopy hovers over the whole
complex, which contains a large public square protected from the
surrounding motorways with landscape architecture and local
vegetation.

Ballen House
El Retiro, Colombia
This house comprises 2 separate structures linked by a path
and a large garden in a forest clearing. What could have been a
single larger house was planned as dispersed volumes positioned
on a steep slope, each one situated uniquely according to the
topographic features of the forest clearing. Originally a cattle
pasture, the site provided an opportunity to reconfigure the
landscape by designing new gardens to link both structures.
One house stands 4 m over the terrain standing on a single cross-
shaped column, while the other long and partially sunken house
acts as a retention wall. Designed by the architects and developed
in stainless steel to avoid future maintenance, the structures share
stainless-steel details, window profiles, and formwork.
The experience of each house differs because the structural
solutions create 2 different climates and relationships with the
slope – one closer to the ground, cave-like, and the other elevated
and airy. The gardens link the houses and were planted with
species that seem to be from a much higher climatic zone –
called páramo in Colombia – along with wild orchids, bromeliads,
and other small plants selected for their similarity to high-
altitude paramo plants. In a climate that is indeed cold, high, and
mountainous, these plantings create a fantasy garden of plants
that look like other plants from higher altitudes.
The same details and materials in outdoor areas are used indoors,
helping to create the sense that the houses are larger than they
are, as one of them is just 60 m2 and the other 75 m2.
Ultimately the 2 structures behave as a single house; they are
not an exercise in minimal living, but rather an experiment in
satisfying the needs of a larger space by relying on the gardens as
spaces that can complement the interiors. Both structures offer
completely different atmospheres by employing opposite ways of
relating to the slope and the carefully designed gardens.

Located in the Cundinamarca region of Colombia, Woven
House is an experimental house associated with a family
coffee plantation in an isolated rural community, and an
exercise in demonstrating professional responsibility toward
the environment and local society. During the design and
construction process, a community formed, including as many
stakeholders as possible in the decision-making process and
viewing the whole process as an opportunity for learning and
training through the prototyping of the house. Woven House
is not only physically woven, but also weaves through its
landscape via the participation of its inhabitants, reflecting
social construction, open and intelligent design, biodiverse
architecture, and low environmental impact. It seeks to
represent innovation, a new architectural model for the future
development of Colombia’s rural areas.

For Orquideorama, we decided to use a geometric strategy,
adaptable to the irregularities of the internal outline of the
forest, so no trees had to be cut down. The client requested a
project that could adapt to an unknown budget and grow over
time. Therefore, we proposed a building made up of modules
(7 hexagons of the same size, adding to a module of 380 m2),
which we could group into different sizes and shapes.
To bring economic resources to the botanical garden, its
representatives requested an ambiguous program that allowed
the coexistence of tropical gardens with varied activities such
as weddings, concerts, conferences, and food-related and
educational events. Therefore, we did not propose a building
with long spans and perimeter supports, but rather one with a
large roof supported by groups of hollow columns to allow the
growth of gardens inside.
In plan, we expanded the size of the geometry of the honeycombs.
In section, we directly transferred the scale of the surrounding
trees to the project: 14 m high between the floor and the wooden
ceiling, and 2 m thick for the cantilevered metal structure, the
opaque and translucent roof, and the internal wood cladding that
together generated an entrance with filtered light.
The tropical climate and the specific program allowed us to propose
a building open to the surrounding forest, with a slight vertical
control perimeter and an intermediate space that is never wholly
an interior. We controlled the access using low pivoting doors and
perimeter slopes, and a vertical textile mesh for sun control located
in the upper part of the hollow centers. The horizontal rains enter
the building slightly, and we filtered the afternoon sun through
vertical textile mesh, which protects the orchids.

We believed this church should reflect its character as a public
building, rather than express only its ceremonial nature. Of
course we addressed tradition and ritual as intrinsic to the
project, but our first impulse was to think about how to best
articulate and act on the church’s role as a place for people to
gather. With these principles in mind we turned to the Mexican
typology of the open chapel.
We sought to establish the chapel as a place of easy access, a
simple canopy that would allow air to circulate and provide
shade. The chapel occupies a simple cross-shaped plan, exactly
like a basilica. In the elevation, curves define and govern both
the altar and the confessionals. In the case of the altar, a curved
concrete wall 1.8 m high, contains the ceremony, while an
inclined plane behind it allows the reflection of the sun and
the brightness of the floor to create a pleasant light. At the
same time, when it rains, this surface acquires an immaterial
condition, thanks to the reflection of the water running down it,
building an ephemeral mirror of the sky.
The section also plays an important role in clarifying the space.
Defined by a simple roof, the space is developed and supported
at 4 points and deployed as a concrete structural arch on all 4
sides, while the base plane progressively slopes from the exterior
to the interior, detaching from the exterior to not only guarantee
seclusion but also allow for using the space as an auditorium.
