The E/S SIG OUT setting determines whether the trigger (KP) from either connector CN7 or CN8
outputs or not.

1) When external monitor unit is connected to either connector CN7 or CN8,

• Select HF for the E/S SIG OUT setting, if external monitor is connected to CN7.
• Select LF for the E/S SIG OUT setting, if external monitor is connected to CN8.

2) When external monitor unit is connected to both connectors CN7 and CN8, select "LF/HF"
for E/S SIG OUT.

4
2. SIGNAL FLOW
The function of FCV-1200L is mainly controlled by the CPU on the MAIN board in the Processor
Unit. The key settings on the Control Panel are read by the CPU on the PNL board and send to the
CPU on the MAIN board via the data communication line. Major I/O signals between the MAIN
board and the ES board are transmission signal, received signal and control signals.
The echo signal is sent from the ES board to the MAIN board and then converted into R/G/B signals,
and then delivered to the DISP board in the Monitor Unit "MU101C" together with HS, VS and YC
signals. When interface unit "IF-8000" is connected, those signals are sent via the MIF board in the
IF-8000 to the external VGA monitor or standard LCD monitor "MU-101C".

The EXIF unit interfaces the signals between external unit ( ETR, TS, VI-1100, EX-7, MT-12) and
the MAIN board.

The transmitting and receiving amplifier circuits are the same circuits for all frequencies between 15
and 200 kHz except 400 kHz. When the ES board is set to 400 kHz, the connector CN3 is marked
by "400 kHz"

Jumper settings, J1 and J7, depend on the frequency of the ES board and are detected by the CPU on
the MAIN board to generate the transmission signal and 1st local carrier signals to the ES board. The
signal from the connector J2 is displayed on the right side screen (H) and the signal from the J1 is
displayed on the left side screen (L) when the dual display mode is selected.
Jumpers, J2 and J8, are set depending on the presence of the ES board.

Transmitting
The transmission output voltage is determined by the VTX voltage which is controlled by the CPU
in accordance with the "SUPPLY VOLTAGE" set on the XDCR SETTING menu.
The maximum output power of the transmission circuit is 3 kW.

12
Receiving Circuit
The Received signals both H and L frequencies are converted into 246.2 kHz (1st IF signal) by the
first mixer circuit and then converted into 11 kHz (2nd IF signal) by the second mixer circuit after
amplified by the TVG amplifier circuit. The local carrier signals (1st LOCAL/ 2nd LOCAL) for the
mixer circuit are generated by the MAIN board.
The 2nd IF signals named "TRX SIG H" and "TRX SIG L" are outputted to the MAIN board.

The amplitude of the receiver circuit is controlled by the TVG voltage (TRX TVG) which is also
generated by the MAIN board. The maximum amplitude of the receiver circuit is 46 dB.

3.3.3 MAIN Board (02P6269)

See the block diagram shown in figure 3.6.

Received signals ( TRX SIG H/L ) from the ES board are converted into digital signals by the A/D
converter "U64" and then converted into parallel data by the serial to parallel converter "U26".
The output of the U26, linear signal, is compressed into log signal by the linear to log converter
"U8" and then sent to the switching circuit composed by U9/U10/U11/U15.
In the switching circuit, the received signals, digital and log signals, from the internal transceiver
unit or the external transceiver unit, are switched according to the display mode selection and then
selected signal is sent to the master and slave Gate Arrays "U65/U66".
The slave Gate Array (U66) processes the signal (L) and then output it to the master Gate Array.
The master Gate Array (U65) processes the signal (H) and converts into R/G/B signals, the signal
(L) from the slave Gate Array(U66) is also converted into R/G/B signals by U65. The R/G/B signals
are sent to the display unit or the interface unit "IF-8000" from the connector CN1.

The Master Gate Array also generates the transmission data to the DDS (direct digital synthesizer)
and KPOM/KPOS to the KP Selector. When internal transceiver unit is selected in the "ES DRAFT
SETTING" menu, the KPOM and KPOS are supplied to each DDS circuit as KPIM/ KPIS. When
the external transceiver unit (ETR) is selected on the menu, the KPOM/KPOS named EKPO are
outputted to the ETR. Each DDS circuit generates transmission signals "TX1H/TX0H and
TX1L/TX0L" to each TX amplifier circuit and carrier signals "LOCAL 1 H and LOCAL1 L" to
each mixer circuit on the ES board.

Figure 3.7 Block diagram of EXIF Unit

The EXIF unit is required when the external transceiver unit (ETR) is installed, and when
monitoring the video signal with the external equipment or monitoring the video signal from the
external equipment.

For external transceiver unit (ETR)

The EXIF outputs the GAIN/TVG control voltage and transmission trigger pulse (KP OUT H/L),
and inputs the echo signals (SIG IN AC/DC) and KPs (KP IN H/L).
The KP IN H and KP IN L signals are feedback signals of the transmission trigger pulse to acquire
the received signal into the processor circuit on the MAIN board.

Signal Output (SIG OUT)

Only echo signals of the internal transceiver unit are outputted from SIG OUT terminal of the EXIF
unit. When external transceiver unit is selected on the menu, the signal output is suspended.

KP Output
Trigger signals corresponding to the selected unit in the menu are outputted from the KP OUT

15
terminals when the external transceiver unit (ETR) or EX mode is selected.

Gain and TVG voltage

When external transceiver unit is selected on the menu, Gain and TVG data, which are set on the
control panel, are derived from the CPU on the MAIN board to the CPU on the EXIF board and
converted into the analog voltage by the D/A converter.
The analog Gain and TVG voltage is supplied to the receiver amplifier in the ETR unit and control
the amplitude.

Gain and TVG control voltage are outputted from the EXIF board. The CPU on the EXIF1 board
generates the Gain and TVG data to the D/A converter in accordance with the GAIN/TVG data sent
by the CPU on the MAIN board.

How to set transducer data in MANUAL setting menu

All transducers supplied by FURUNO and some transducers of other maker are listed on XDCR
TYPE menu. MANUAL setting is used only when the transducer type is not listed on the XDCR
TYPE menu, since the maximum transmission rate is 600 PPM in comparison with that is 750 PPM
on the XDCR TYPE menu.

Procedure
1. Set the frequency of the transducer
2. Measure the transmission voltage with the transducer connected to original transmitter unit.

Note; when measuring the transmission voltage, use a 100:1 probe and connect it between G and A
(or G and B) to prevent damaging a test probe, see figure 6.3.

Figure 6.4 shows the measuring point of the transmission wave.

36
A

Transmission
voltage (Vpp) G

Figure 6.4 Measuring point

The transmission voltage is twice the voltage between G and A (or G and B).

3. The transmission voltage divided by 16 is "Supply Voltage".

4. Enter the voltage value, a little lower than that of "Supply Voltage" obtained in step 3, into menu.
5. Connect the transducer to the FCV-1200L and measure the transmission voltage.
6. Re-enter the "Supply Voltage" so that the transmission voltage becomes the same value as
measured in step 2.

Basically the transducer, whose output power is over 3 kW and not listed on the XDCR TYPE menu,
is not allowed to connect to the FCV-1200L because of the maximum output power of internal
transmission circuit of the FCV-1200L is 3 kW.

37
7. TESTING TRANSDUCER
The transducers are classified into electrostriction type and magnetrostriction type.
Generally the transducer elements of the electrostriction type are made of barium titanate, and the
magnetrostriction types are made of ferrite.
Those are shown with the alfa-numeric after frequency number of the transducer type, For example;
50B - 6: "50" shows frequency and "B" means barium titanate.
28F -18: "28" shows frequency and "F" means ferrite.

7.1 Checking transducer with multimeter

Since electrostriction type of the transducer equivalent to the capacitor electrically, checking method
of the transducer is the same as that of the capacitance check using a capacitance meter.
Following table shows a reference value of a transducer.
Transducer Type Capacitance Transducer Type Capacitance
50B-6/50B-6G 7500 pF 200B-5/5S 2560 pF
50B-12 8500pF 200B-8 3200pF
88B-8 3200pF 200B-8N 8000 pF
200B-8B 5500 pF
Note: Capacitance including 10m cable (100pF/m)
The magnetrostriction type of the transducer is driven by a coil winding a transducer , therefore, the
conductance of coil may be checked by the multimeter.
The transducer type marked "H" has matching transformer inside; for example: 150B-12H.
Therefore, it should be checked as magnetrostriction type even though it is electorstriction type.

Procedure to check impedance;

1. Set the SW to #1.
2. Set the output frequency of a signal generator to the resonant frequency of the transducer.
3. Measure the voltage across the transducer with an oscilloscope.
4. Set the SW to #2 and adjust the potentiometer so as to obtain the same voltage measured
in step 3.
5. Measure the resistance of the potentiometer. This resistance may be considered the impedance of
the transducer at the resonant frequency.
Note: the impedance of the transducer differs with measuring condition, i.e., in air or in water.

The tables 7.1/7.2 show the impedance and resonant impedance of the transducer in water.

7.3 Checking resonant frequency characteristic

Procedure 1 : using the impedance check circuit shown in figure 7.1.
Make an impedance check circuit as shown in figure 7.1 and measure the resistance at various
frequencies. Plot the measured resistance vs. frequency.
The typical curve is shown in figure 7.2.

Impedance

A
Fo: Resonant frequency
Fr: Reverse resonant point
Frequency
Fo Fr

Figure 7.2 Resonant characteristic curve : Frequency vs. Impedance

To check the transducer whether it is good or not, compare the curve with one obtained from a good
transducer.
If the transducer is defective, impedance curve differs form that of the normal transducer.

• When transducer elements peel off the housing, the ratio of A to B increases. This is similar to
the measurement in air.
• When transducer element is cracked, several other resonant points may be obtained.
• When transducer element split up, resonant point may be not obtained at the frequency "Fo".

Since the waveform differs with the resister "R" and the measuring condition, i.e., in water or in air,
the resister and measuring condition must be the same when checking the transducer.

Note: when check a transducer in water, sufficient clearance below transducer is required.

Figure 7.4 on the next page shows the sample waveforms of the normal and defective transducer
"type 50B-12" measured in water (depth is 2 m, more or less)
The waveforms ringed in figure 7.4 show a defect of the transducer.

The section 7.4 shows sample waveforms of normal transducers.

The waveforms shown in right side are measured in water (depth is 2 m, more or less), and the
waveforms shown in left side are measured in air.

As mentioned above, the waveforms are differ with the measuring condition, therefore, the
recommendable way to check the transducer is to compare the waveforms between normal and
doubtful transducers by the same test instruments and measuring conditions at once.

9. CONNECTTING EXT. VGA MONITOR
More about external monitor

1) The external monitor is a VGA monitor or equivalent.

2) The line impedance of R, G, and B must be 75 ohms.
3) Horizontal synchronous signal is 31.469 kHz, negative polarity.
4) Vertical synchronous signal is 59.94 Hz, negative polarity.
5) The cable between the VGA monitor and the IF-8000 is not specified by the IF-8000, but it must
accord to the VGA monitor if specified. Long cable may cause the problem such as color
distortion and moving picture.

When monitor color is not correct,

1) Make sure that all bits of S1 on the MIF board in the IF-8000 must be turned on when only
VGA monitor is connected to the IF-8000.
2) Make sure that all bits of S1 on the MIF board in the IF-8000 must be turned off when VGA
monitor and the standard monitor MU-101C are connected to the IF-8000.
3) If switch setting does not cure the problem,
(a) Make sure that the cable between the IF-8000 and the VGA monitor is not too long, using a
shorter cable.
(b) Adjust R9, R10, and R11 on the MIF board for signal level of 0.7 Vpp, observing TP4, TP5,
and TP6 with a oscilloscope respectively. The input impedance to the monitor may not
match to 75 ohms.

When picture is not steady,

1) Change jumper settings JP6/JP7 on the MIF board to “Buffer.”

2) Adjust the frequency of synchronous signals manually on the VGA monitor.
3) Shorten the cable between the IF-8000 and the VGA monitor, if it is too long. The cable length
depends on the VGA monitor to be used. The cable between the processor unit and the IF-8000
is 15 m or less.
