ACTIVITY 3
HISTOLOGY

A group pf cells of similar structure and function is called tissue. The study of tissues is
called Histology.
Tissues perform specific functions thus the morphology, location and position of the cells
have definite relation to their function. There are five major types of tissues namely: 1)
epithelial; 2) connective; 3) vascular; 4) muscular and 5) nervous.

A. EPITHELIAL TISSUES
These tissues cover the outer and inner surfaces of the body, both external and internal.
They function for absorption, protection, secretion and excretion. It includes the lining of the
digestive system, lining of glands, blood vessels, moth, nose and anus.
The epithelial tissues maybe be simple when it is made up of single cell or stratified when
composed of several layers.

B. CONNECTIVE TISSUE

This supports, binds and connect together the different body parts of the body. The cells
composing the tissue are always embedded in an expensive, intercellular matrix modified into
different forms. They are classified into fibrous, adipose cartilage and bone.

C. MUSCULAR TISSUE

Movement in most animals is produced by long slender muscle cells. These contain fibers
known as myofibrils, which contract upon stimulation. They are the ones responsible for various
types of movements. These also add shape and form to the body. There are three types of
muscles in vertebrates: skeletal, smooth and cardiac.
