RESEARCH AND CREATIVE OUTPUT

1. Enumerate and discuss at least 10 practical uses or
applications of mathematics. Combine words, numbers
and pictures in your discussion.

1. Cooking Food
People use math knowledge when
cooking. For example, it is very
common to use a half or double of a
recipe. In this case, people use
proportions and ratios to make correct
calculations for each ingredient. If a
recipe calls for 2/3 of a cup of flour,
the cook has to calculate how much is
half or double of 2/3 of a cup. Then the
cook has to represent the amount
using standard measures used in
baking, such as ¼ cup, 1/3 cup, ½ cup
or 1 cup.

2. Managing Money
Math is useful in finding the best deal for
food items. For example, your teen will need
to decide which pack of soda to buy when
given a choice of 20 oz., 2-liter, 12 pack, or
24-pack. Stores often have sales that give a
percentage off an original price. It is helpful
for people to know how to figure out the
savings. This math skill is very useful
because it helps us calculate discounts so we
can buy an item for the best price offered.

3. Sports
Geometry and trigonometry can
help you to improve your skill in
sports. It can help you find the best
way to hit a ball, make a basket or

run around the track. Basic knowledge of math also helps keep track of sports
scores.

4. Time Management
Managing time is one of the most
difficult tasks which is faced by a lot
of people. An individual wants to
complete several assignments in a
limited time. Not only the
management, some people are not
even able to read the timings on an
analog clock. Such problems can be
solved only by understanding the
basic concepts of maths. Maths not
only helps us to understand the
management of time but also to value it.

5. Driving
When driving, math is being utilized
both in a general understanding, and in
actual use. You use math to make
calculations and adjustments as
you drive. You need to
understand math skills to know how
your vehicle is operating and how the
environment is changing around you as
you drive.

6. Computer Applications
Ever wondered how a computer works?
How easily it completes every task in a
proper series of action? The simple reason
for this is the application of maths. The
fields of mathematics and computing
intersect both in computer science. The
study of computer applications is next to

impossible without maths. The concepts like computation, algorithms, and many
more forms the base for different computer applications like powerpoint, word,
excel, etc. are impossible to run without maths.

7. Marketing
The marketing agencies make the proper
plans as to how to promote any product or
service. The tasks like promoting a product
online, use of social media platforms,
following different methods of direct and
indirect marketing, door to door sales,
sending e-mails, making calls, providing
the number of schemes like ‘Buy one get
one free’, ‘Flat 50% off’, offering discounts
on special occasions, etc. are all done on
the basis of simple mathematical concepts.
Thus, maths is present everywhere.

8. Making Music
Numbers can tell us more about music.
This is comparable
to mathematical divisions of time. Now,
each piece of music has a time signature
which gives its rhythmic information, like
how many beats there are in each
measure. All the music notes have
numerical connections and a number of
beats.

9. Banking
We are using mathematical concepts
everyday when we utilize online banking
to help us pay bills, transfer money, and
manage our personal accounts.  For
starters, understanding the basic
principles of interest will help you to get
the most out of your money.  Whether
you are looking at interest as a means to
make money, or considering the effects of

paying interest on a loan, this is a concept that we run into constantly in our daily
lives.  Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of interest will help you to be a
smarter “banker.” And you are dealing with stocks, bonds, or other investments,
you will need to have an understanding of these fundamental concepts in order to
make wise investment decisions.

10. Statistics
If it weren’t for Statistics, organizations
such as government agencies wouldn’t be
able to measure the needs of their people
and what issues should be address and
resolved right away. If it weren’t for Math,
marketing firms will not know what are the
needs and wants of their customers and
how they will be encourage to buy their
products. It is through numbers that
companies are able to grasp if they are making an impact to their target audience.

2. Write an essay/synthesis paper focusing on the

following aspects of mathematics:
 Mathematics helps organize patterns and regularities
 Mathematics helps predict the behavior of nature and
phenomena in our world
 Mathematics helps control nature and occurrences in the
world for our own ends.
 Mathematics is indispensable.

Since the ancient times, Mathematics has been helpful to the flourishment
of our civilization. One might have thought of ignoring Mathematics
because he cannot understand it as a subject. And although he hated the
subject, he will never be freed from it, because the patterns and regularities
that surrounds him are considered as Mathematics. He did not also know
that Mathematics helps us to predict the behavior of the nature and its
phenomena. Neither he knew that it helps to control these occurences in
the nature to protect us. So, is it really possible to live without Mathematics
if one does not like it because of its complexity although it plays a huge role
in our history, present, and future?

Mathematics has been the source of enlightenment to our understanding of

the world and the universe and is an indispensable tool for the humankind
to get educated. Mathematics can shape the reasoning ability and
personality of an individual. It has been included in the scool curriculum
from primary to tertiary education. It plays a very vital role to shape these
students and apply Mathematics in commerce, architecture, engineering,
law, and almost all the other professions. However, it is also important for
the development of our technology and society. This importance started
from the sticks and stones which are used to mark and draw the wall to
record the sales and acquire receivables of the ancient seller, and until the
accounting process has been introduced by Friar Luca Pacioli, the Father
of Accountancy and Bookkeeping. Other than that, the computer
applications we use everyday are composed of different algorithms and
codes which is also Mathematics. In fact, we cannot really dispense
Mathematics from our lives.

We were only children when we have learned and explored the world of
patterns. Having the skill to recognize and create patterns can help us to
predict what is the next thing in line or what will happen next. Through the
understanding of it, we can acquire the ability to learn more complex sets of
pattern for the number concept and mathematical operations. Although

Mathematics of patterns can be in the Algebra, analysation of data and

solving of mathematical problems, it can also be found in the nature, art,
music, and literature. Not only it gives us skills and abilities, it can also be
used to make educated guesses, assumptions, ans hypothesis. Learning
patterns and regularities amaze since we were only children but it helps us
to develop our critical thinking and logic.

Mathematics involved in Earth Science helps the professionals under this

field to further understand the behaviour of nature and its phenomena by
predicting the size, location, and timing of it. In the past, it is impossible for
the earth scientist to forecast hurricanes, volcanic eruption, earthquakes,
and landslides. But these hardworking scientists make use of the
Mathematics which surrounds them. They tried to relied on the statisitical
methods to forecast such events. However, not so long after, a professor of
mathematical sciences at Yale University, Benoit Mandelbrot, found that it
is more precise to use the fractal order and method to find the patterns
from the past hurricane landfall location and timing to the size and
frequency of the hurricane’s wind speed. It also became easier because by
understanding these fractal orders in the natural hazards, the researchers
found out that they can also predict it, measure the past events, and be
ready in the present. Therefore, Mathematics does not only gives us
number but a bunch of number which has the capacity to save our lives.

Mathematics can also protect us from the natural occurrences and hazards.
Mathematical modelling is the how Mathematics can help to control nature
and occurrence in the world for our own safety. This ways also helps to
reduce the damage and deaths if we faced these events unprepared.
Because Mathematics can help to understand why nature is such a
powerful force, it can also help to quantify the relationships of the patterns
based on the observations in the physical world. It can also help us to
calculate distances of the different factors of different natural hazards, and
through this, our beloved earth scientist will communicate with the public
and make sure they are safe even before the chaos. Mathematics is indeed

a gift of universe and world to us humans because it helps us to live better

and better.

In conclusion, it will never be possible to live without Mathematics. It is a

form of universal language which is helpful in every culture and country. It
is a language that can be found in the markets, working places, streets,
homes, parks, sceneries, every places we go to, and whatever we do.
Although, sometimes is it complex for our understanding, we really cannot
dispense Mathematics from our lives. Because it develops our critical
thinking and logical reasoning which is helpful for the understanding of the
world. Mathematics also helps us to understand our world and so we need
to exert effort for our questions which can just be out there in the field. It
maybe the next thing to save the lives of everyone else in the world. And
lastly, it is a gift given to us and to become an instrument for a better living.
Mathematics is indeed everywhere.
