Module: Reading Pulse 2

Saved By An MP3 Player

Sophie Frost, a schoolgirl form England, felt very lucky when her grandmother gave
her an MP3 player as a present. She didn’t know just how lucky she was, however. When an
unexpected accident happened a few days later, the MP3 player probably saved her life!
14-year-old Sophie was going for a walk with her friend, Mason Billington, when it
started raining. The two friends took shelter from the rain under a tree and were sitting
together when lightning struck. The lightning hit them both and they lost consciousness.
Then Mason woke up and carried Sophie to the nearest road in order to get help. A car
stopped and took them to hospital. Sophie had some burns on her chest and legs. She also
had some damage to her eyes and ears, but fortunately she quickly recovered.
How did Sophie’s MP3 player prevent her from having serious injuries? When the
accident happened, she wasn’t listening to music on the player, but was wearing it around her
neck. Doctors believe that the lightning travelled through the wire of the MP3 player instead
of through Sophie’s body. Even though she was lucky this time, one thing’s for sure. The
next time there’s a storm, she and her friend won’t sit underneath a tree!

if you learn the greeting practice to avoid offending your hosts.
If you travel to East Asian countries such as Korea and Japan, you will have to bow
to one another when you greet someone. In China, one only bows to their superior or
elderly. In Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia and the Philippines, a mere handshake is
not enough. In the Philippines, when you greet someone older than you, you will press their
knuckles against your forehead, as if asking for a blessing. The Malays in Malaysia kiss the
back of their elderly’s hands.
In Ukraine, you must kiss each other three times on the cheek. Start with the left

BE WISE THINK TWICE

We are constantly surrounded by advertisements from billboards to television
commercials. Everywhere we turn, we are bound on to see advertisements. Do
advertisements give us accurate information of the true worth of the product advertised as
good as they claim to be? How often have you gone back feeling cheated after a shopping
trip? The fact is many of us do and many of us are like to get cheated again!
So what can we do to protect ourselves from being cheated? To begin with, never give
in to sales gimmicks. If you are told that the price is only ‘right now’, walk away!
Salespeople do not want to think about the product, there is a good chance that you will
reconsider buying it.
Apart from that, practise self-control and avoid making decisions that you may regret
later. Before you go shopping, prepare a shopping list of the things that you need to buy. Set
a spending limit do that you do not buy things that you may regret later. In this way, you will
spend within your budget.
Always do a research on the product from buying it. Compare prices and know the
value of the product that you buy. Do your homework so that it is worth buying it.
Being a smart consumer is not just about getting a good deal. It also means spending
within your limits, knowing your rights as a consumer and being an informed consumer.
False advertisements can appear anywhere. Take responsibility for your spending habits. Be

3. No text for reference (you think of your own content).
4. Go straight to the point
A: “What are you going to do this weekend?”
B: “Hey, how are you? I’m good. By the way, I am planning to go to the library this
Saturday.”
or
A: “What are you going to do this weekend?”
B: “I am thinking to go to the library this Saturday.”
Which is more natural in your daily life? There you go. Remember, natural
language wins.
So in the new format we want to take away all the not so natural greetings and go
straight to the point.

5. Explain All the Good Things and Some of the Bad Things

- One way to help students elaborate is to get them to think about the good things
about their choice and the bad things about what they have rejected.

6. A Short and Sweet Ending

- Again, write as natural as you can.

"I think you should …….. If you know how……, you can always………. It is also
……………. You do not have to………... So I think ……… is the best for you. Hope this
helps.’
