Handicrafts and Handlooms are the cultural heritage of the Himachal


Pradesh and all important part of the lives of Kulluites. There is an amazing range
of beautiful Handloom and Handicraft products in kullu. The Kullu Shawls are
famous and admired for their elegant look. And also traditional colours of the
handlooms probably manifest the people zests for life and creations.

Kullu is the land of beauty and culture heritage and there are various arts and
crafts that through ages have won the hearts of millions .

INTRODUCTION

RAW MATERIALS

 Local Wool – gaddis or local Sheapards


 Australian Merino Wool – spun at the spining Mills
 Pashmina Wool – pashmina goat in Tibet
 Angora Wool- angora rabbit from Germany
 Cashmelon or Acrylic yarns – synthetic wool from Ludhiana

DESIGN & MOTIFS

Traditionally – 3 borders at two ends woven in brilliant colors – yellow,


green, white, or red on contrasting backgrounds commercially selling

1. single colour shawl without any design


2. shawl with a traditional border, stripes on the four sides
3. shawl with ‘ek phool’ , shawl with ‘teen phool’.
4. shawl with buti all over it

PRICES
Cost of these shawls can vary significantly depending on its design
and other factors. Despite its expensive cost hand woven shawls
are very popular with its admirers because of its organic
nature(handmade), beautiful, elegant design and its warm
woolen fabric.
Prices of Kullu shawls depend on
these factors: design patterns, the
amount of those patterns in shawls,
the wool type and the quality of the
fabric made of those wools. Prices can
range between Rs. 800/- to Rs
10,000/-. Higher cost shawls are also
available in the market but they are
often difficult to find.

Kullu shawls occupy a place of pride in the handicrafts


of the district. Like the juicy red delicious and golden
apples, these exquisite specimens of art adoring the
fair damsels of this fairland, are becoming increasingly
populars as precious souvenirs for the tourists.
The peculiar use to which they are put to by
women folk is like a saree with the difference that the
folds are in the front and the end does not cover the
head. It's both ends are pinned just below the
shoulders on the front with local silver broaches having
long chains and called "Boomini" in the local dialect.
