➢ In 1986 Indian Railway decided to award a consultancy


contract to JEC through RITES for 2x25kV Traction
System.

➢ The 2X25kV System has been commissioned in BINA-


KATNI-ANUPPUR- BISHRAMPUR / CHIRMIRI
Section in 1995 for regular running of Train Services.

➢ The consultancy contact for Design of 2X25kV System


was awarded by RITES to Japan Electrical Consulting
Co. Ltd. (JEC).
➢ JEC designed the 2x25kV System specifically as per the
requirements/conditions of BINA-KATNI Section of
Indian Railway.

➢ In this section 4 Nos. TSS have been provided with


spacing of TSS at an average of 80Km.

❖ The 2X25kV system is based on the idea of distributing


the voltage along the line at higher voltage (50kV) and
feeding the train at 25kV. For this the substations feed the
system at 50kV and through intermediate auto-transformer
(AT) centers supply power to the Rolling stock at 25kV.

❖ To implement the system, the traction sub-station (TSS)


will have transformers with secondary at 50kV with
intermediate tap. This tap will be connected to rail and
ground performing the functions of neutral in the system.
❖ Center tap is solidly connected to ground thus one terminal
is at +25 kV and another at -25 kV or we may that the two
supplies at a phase difference of 1800. Traction line is fed
by +25 kV and a feeder wire at -25 kV thus the voltage in
between these circuits is 50 kV but to ground is 25 kV.
Therefore, the insulation or clearance is designed for 25
kV only.

❖ Voltage Drop is much less as compared to conventional


System. (In 2X25kV system current is distributed through
feeder wire and OHE, due to which the current reduces to
half of the current in OHE under existing 25kV system).

❖ Longer Spacing of Traction Sub Stations.

❖ Power Drawn from HT grid is three Phase therefore less


voltage unbalance.

❖ The Electromagnetic Interference emitted due to the load


current in the OCS and Running Rail is considerably
reduced.

❖ There are more Traction Power Facilities required for


2X25kV Autotransformer Feed Type System than for
1X25kV System, but number of substations are less with
there associated HV Utility Circuits, HV Transformers and
HV Switchgear-this is a major advantage.

➢ Traction Sub-Station with three Single Phase Transformer


(V connection or Open Delta).

➢ Traction Sub Station with two single Phase Transformer.

• The system 2×25 kV shall always end at auto transformer


center, therefore at each side of the neutral section
between two sub-station, an auto-transformer center must
be located. The rest of the auto transformer center will be
located along the line at SSP. In fact, auto transformer of
54/27 kV voltage rating is located at every 10/15 Km of
which outer terminals are connected between the catenary
and the feeder wire.
