Know radio station.

The general manager of the Know radio station in his memo states that he suggests shifting the programming from rock and roll music to a continuous news format. He bases his argument on certain observations which donot provide cogent and concrete reasons for a complete shift in the radio programming. The memo states that the number of older people in the listening area has increased dramatically and the total number of listeners has recently declined. But this does not imply that shifting the programming to continuous news format will increase the number of listeners.The older generation may be specifically interested in watching the news on television which provides them with a better understanding of the entire issue, rather than merely listening to it on the radio. In such a situation, completely shifting the rock and roll programming, may have an adverse effect considering the fact that the few listeners who are genuinely interested in rock and roll will also be forfeited. The reason behind decreased sales of recorded music in the Music stores in the local area maynot be the loss of interest of listeners in specifically rock and roll. The music records which have lower sales might actually be some other kind of music and not necessarily rock and roll. Nowhere in the the music sales records, is the genre of music whose sales have been affected , mentioned. Moreover the sales of recorded music may have decreased just because the radio station provide completely caters to the need of rock and roll listeners! One cannot say that since the continuos news stations in neighboring cities have been successful, so will one in our city. The news stations in the neighboring cities maybe flourishing since it is a period of increased political activity. The survey has been taken just before the recent election which is a time for political interests of the people to surface. The local citizens will naturally want to be better informed about politics when the elections are impending. This can be just a phase which will pass as the elections are over and eventually the people will revert to their interests in music. The current rock and roll music might not be very appealing to the listeners due to a slack period of new musical compositions. Oves a few more days , new records might be released which may attract more listeners. Any listener will want a variety in the programs he listens to. A news channel might attract his interest for some time but he will want to relax and listen to music eventually. Shutting down the rock and roll station will deprieve him of his leisure listening. Hence stopping rock and roll programs might not be a good idea. I would want a compete and itemwise survey of the record sales of the music shop in the locality and a record of number of people interested in news over a longer period of time which will be a true representative of the area in which peoples major interests lie.
