Olive tree: the symbol for those with the understanding or
mind of God
Oil: love
‘The fruit of the olive tree is oil. First, we need to realize that the olive,
for the most part, was not eaten, It was made into oil. Its commonly assumed
that the oil is a symbol for the Holy Spirit, and, in a sense, it is. The first fruit
of knowing God is love, not the Holy Spirit. It is given by the Holy Spirit.
We are encouraged throughout the Scriptures to anoint one another with
oil. We cannot anoint anyone with the Holy Spirit. We can pray for them, and
they may receive the Holy Spirit, or the Holy Spirit may move upon them,
but we cannot anoint them with it. We can, however, anoint them with love.
Fig tree: represents those who have the understanding or
the mind of the law
Fig: the fruit of the fig tree, the understanding of the law,
was man’s coming to God under the law
‘The only thing that Christ ever cursed was the fig tree, and it withered
from its roots up and died. His curse was simply that the fig tree would never
bear fruit again, Was this a random act out of the frustration of finding no
fruit? It was actually a prophecy. He came to the tree and found no figs (sal-
vation) being produced by the fig tree (understanding of the law), He said
that the fig tree (the understanding of the law) would never bear fruit again.
‘Two days later, he died on the cross, and no one would ever come to salvation
under the law again.
Palm tree: understanding righteousnessAnother tree used throughout the Scriptures is the palm tree. The palm
tree represents the understanding of righteousness. Psalms 92:12 tells us, “The
righteous shall flourish like the palm tree.”
How is the fruit of the palm, the date, used in scripture? It is not. The
date was a common fruit, if not the most common fruit, in the Holy Land, but
it is not mentioned once in the Scriptures. I believe that this is because the
fruit of righteousness is salvation, and salvation is not found on this earth, We
may claim it. We know that it is ours, but it comes only when we are taken by
Christ Jesus to stand in His righteousness before the Father.
