APPENDIX
1.0 Introduction
This guideline defines the formal system for tag numbering and identification of all new plant equipment
located in NGL/1, NGL/2 and Gas Distribution Stations under Mesaieed maintenance responsibility.
Note that any changes to this document from its last revision are indicated by a bold vertical bar to
the left of each area of change. References made throughout this guideline are numbered inside square
brackets [ ] and may be found in the Bibliography of section (22).
2.0 Custodian
The Custodian of this standard guideline is EE, who is responsible for the accuracy and quality of its
contents and for its future revisions, where these are required to reflect industry trends or changes to QP
business practices.
3.0 Purpose
The purpose of this guideline is to provide a unified and formal system of tag numbering and equipment
identification. Its main purpose is to provide detailed requirements for identification to be included in the
relevant sections of documents and drawings. The guideline will ensure that future projects will tag
equipment in a standard manner and more importantly, facilitate the data entry to Maintenance Management
Systems.
4.0 Application
QP and any consultant or contractor responsible for providing design and engineering services for
installations and modifications to NGL/1, NGL/2 and Gas Distribution Stations shall apply this standard.
Vendor packages (6.2) shall follow the requirements of this guideline. The Project Engineer and/or
Consultant shall be responsible for implementing tag numbers to the Vendor P&ID’s in accordance with this
guideline.
The requirements of this guideline may not include all eventualities specific to a project. In such instances
the Project Manager shall make the preferred proposal(s) in writing to EE, who in turn will conclude an
approved amendment as a revision to this guideline.
Tag requests for FEED shall be indicated as such on the tag request form in the Project Title Section (Refer
to section 18). The Project Engineer shall inform the MCE (M) whether the FEED has been approved or
cancelled. Each project shall create a complete database (MS Access) to cover all tagged items. The
database shall include but not be limited to the following:
• Tag Number
• Equipment description
• Function Description
• Location
• Manufacturer & Serial Number
• Manufacturers Model Number
• Data Book references (Installation, commissioning and maintenance)
• Reference Drawings
• List of Tag Numbers un-used *
*It is essential to list all tag numbers un-used, as they will be made available for future projects.
Prior to AFC issue, the database shall be issued to MC (M) division for review & inclusion in the MEF
(Master Equipment File) database.

Tag number block requests shall be made using Standard form ES.0.08.0009 [2]. A sample of this form is
shown in appendix B and an electronic version is available from QP Intranet and MCE/5 (M). Guidance for
completing and routing the tag request form is shown in section (18) of this standard.
(b) Only equipment letter codes shown in this standard shall be used.
(d) Where two or more items of equipment are performing the same duty, whether on standby or
online, they shall be tagged with same tag number but be uniquely identified by the addition of a
suffix commencing A, B, C, etc. In the case of some electrical equipment an alphanumeric suffix
may be used e.g. to identify the cubicle and panel numbers within a motor control centre.
(e) The removal of equipment from a particular process or system and the replacement by equipment
performing the same function shall leave the tag number unchanged.
(f) Instruments within the same loop shall use the same sequence number for all devices within the
loop.
ES.0.07.0028
Revision D
Page 5
Major plant equipment shall be identified by a tag number composed of a letter code, abbreviated unit
number followed by a unique 2 digit sequential number as illustrated in the following example:
Where two or more items of plant equipment (side by side) perform the same duty, whether on standby or
online, shall be separately identified by using the same tag number followed by a suffix commencing A, B,
C, etc.
Note: Only tanks located within the process plants shall use the above system. Tanks located in units 2500
(Storage) and 2600 (Loading) shall use tag string of format T-1, T-2, T-3 etc.
*Indicates use of secondary identifier for equipment driver, see section 6.1 and section 11 for HAVC
equipment.
ES.0.07.0028
Revision D
Page 6
An alpha code as given in table 1, is combined with a secondary identifier (see table 2). This identifies a
major mechanical equipment driver / transmission items or major components requiring to be uniquely
identified for maintenance or inspection purposes.
The sequential number for codes shown in table 2 should be the same as the number used for the item it is
driving as explained in the following example:
Plant equipment having multiple drivers or associated components shall have the same tag number and be
suffixed with a letter as shown in the following examples:
A motor of the pump P2120 will be tagged PM2120 the starter PMST2120 and the circuit breaker
PMCB2120 etc.
Fans of heat exchanger E2120 shall be tagged EF2120A, EF2120B, EF2120C etc.
Vendor packages shall conform to this standard. For projects, where standard vendor packages exist using
vendor tag numbers then the vendor shall be encouraged to either convert to QP requirements or add the QP
tag against the existing vendor tag on key documents. (If the latter then a vendor cross reference to the QP
tag table must therefore be produced by the project). This is to facilitate information retrieval.

Line numbers shown on P&IDs, PFD’s, UEFD’s PEFD’s and isometrics shall be numbered as shown in the
following example:
Complete line numbers as shown in the above example shall be shown on the applicable P&ID’s and line
list. Figures shown in bold Italics shall to be shown in other data types.
The line number shall be unique for each line having the same unit number and pipeline service. Each line
shall be numbered consecutively starting with the next available number and rising in increments of one.
The process lines shall be numbered from apparatus to apparatus. For vertical vessels, the numbering of all-
corresponding inlet and outlet lines should start from the top down. Outgoing pipelines from one plant / area
/ to another, either directly or indirectly via bridge, pipe rack or other routing systems, shall carry line
numbers which correspond to the unit of origin as seen in the direction of flow.
In the above example the PC 30 denotes 30mm thick insulation to prevent surface condensation.
The abbreviations for insulation types are as follows:
All actuated valves are coded under the instrument discipline. All hand operated valves of size 2” and above
shown on ALL P&ID’S shall be uniquely tagged as shown in the following example:
13 - BV - 025
Unit Number (see appendix A) Sequential Allocated Number
Valve type (see table 4)
Relief valves will be identified with the letter codes RV. Relief valves located in the Merox plant, unit 1700
shall use letter code PSV.
Example: 21 RV - 038
Note: Code PSV only to be used in NGL/1 Unit 1700 Merox plant. All other units in NGL/1 and NGL/2 to used RV.

Field cables from instruments are identified by the same number as that of the instrument to which they are
connected. The signal cable shall have each end labelled with the instrument tag number.
All instrument cables and multicore cables shall have their cores ferruled at each end with the terminal
identification to which they are connected. Where considered necessary the cable number can prefix these.
Interface wires shall be clearly identified with ferrules indicating the source and destination terminal details.
Wire identification within any system cabinet for systems like PLC, SCADA and DCS and within system
cabinets shall be based on Vendor Rack/Slot/Channel signal allocation and terminal number. See Example
below:
R4 S7 C5 01
Instrument junction boxes are numbered in the same way as instrument cables, except that the cable code
(table 8) is prefixed with ‘IJB’. See example below:
21 IJB E 001
The sequential number of the junction box shall be the same as the sequential number of the multicore cable
of which is terminated. Where more than one multicore cable is connected to a junction box the cables shall
be numbered as in the example fig. 2. Tag numbers for junction boxes therefore need not be requested.
Users of the guideline need not request instrument ‘Junction Box’ numbers since they adopt the same
sequence number of the attached cable.

An example of the tag request advice form is shown in appendix B. The forms are available from QP
Intranet under Departments/Technical Services/Forms.
Any Consultant/Contractor or QP employee may initiate the tag request. All information shall be inputted
into the relevant boxes and only codes in accordance with this standard shall be used. FEED projects must
be indicated in the Project Title section. Instrument items within the same loop shall be indicated as such.
Requests for large block of numbers shall be justified by attaching the relevant data to Tag Request Advice
Form i.e., P&ID’s, Cable Block Diagrams etc.
After the Consultant/Contractor or QP employee has completed the form the QP Project Manager/Engineer
must then approve the form by completing the ‘Approval Section’ before submitting to MCE (M) & MCE/5
(M). This is to ensure that the codes are in accordance with this standard and to eliminate the possibility of
repeat requests for the same items.
Forms completed in accordance with the above will be authorized by MCE (M) and tags will be allocated.
The form will be returned to the QP Project Manager/Engineer who will record that the requested tags have
been issued. The QP Project Manager/Engineer shall acknowledge receipt by signing the bottom of the form
and sending one copy MCE (M) and one copy to the original requester.

Where it is decided to implement a “fieldbus” technology (eg Profibus, Fieldbus Foundation, etc) then all
field-mounted items shall be treated in exactly the same way as any other field-mounted (non-fieldbus) item.
This includes such items as transmitters, switches, converters, junction boxes, cables, valves and the like
(note that junction boxes shall be prefixed D to indicate their discrete/digital signal carrying nature). A
comparison between the traditional and modern (fieldbus) tagging conventions is shown below :-

Note that “daisy-chaining” of interconnecting cables between fieldbus devices is not recommended. It would
necessitate the installation of some form of junction box per fieldbus device in order to allow removal of the
device at some later date, say for maintenance reasons, to ensure that all associated interconnecting cables
remain safety terminated. These “additional” junction boxes would consequentially increase the site
overhead (to maintain hazardous area certification compliance, etc)….and for the lifetime of the facility.
