ABSTRACT
(Sample)

Risk management has become a main part of the organisation’s activities. Its main aim is to help all

other management activities to reach the organisation’s aims directly and efficiently. Systematic risk

management is expecting the unexpected or in other words it is a tool which helps control risks in

construction projects. Its objective is to introduce a simple, practical method of identifying, assessing,

monitoring and managing risk in an informed and structured way. Construction professionals need to

know how to balance the contingencies of risk with their specific contractual, financial, operational and

organisational requirements. The risk management process entails identifying construction risk and

exposures, and formulating an effective risk management strategy to mitigate the potential of loss. Many

construction professionals look at risks individually with a myopic lens and do not realise the potential

impact that other associated risks may have on their business operations. Due to this scenario, this

dissertation is mainly focused on the practice of risk management in Client’s organisation, through

identifying the level of awareness of construction professional towards risk management and to

determine their policy and procedure in dealing with risks in a construction project. Apart from that, it is

also to examine problems and challenges for the implementation of risk management. The method used

was a postal survey to the construction professionals who are working in Client’s organisation.

Unstructured interviews were carried out in order to give a better view on the implementation of risk

management in Malaysian construction industry specifically in Client’s organisation. The research

showed that Malaysian clients are slowly accepting risk management as a management tools that will

help in managing the construction project effectively and successfully. From the research also it can be

conclude that risk management still has a long journey to travel in order to be accepted and recognised

in Malaysian construction industry.
