Abstract

Since the beginning of directional drilling where there is an abundant number of wells, which are

in the same location and where the degree of trajectory has a very complex analysis, a problem

of high importance has been associated, which is the collision of one well with another in the

same field or region. The consequences that this catastrophic event could cause range from an

oil spill to an explosion among other negative effects for the development of oil exploitation, as

well as for the environment that hosts the field. To avoid all these events, a series of measures

or proximity analysis methods have been adopted to control the distance between wells, avoiding

collision and reducing drilling time based on anti-collision rules.

This project analyzes the different factors that cause these events, and which are the minimum

mandatory standards and instructions that must be considered in the improvement of the anti-

collision criteria when drilling near existing wells. As a case study we have the existing directional

wells in the Peruvian northwest, in which the anti-collision criteria to be considered in its planning

or in the execution of directional drilling itself are exemplified.

Introduction

Directional drilling is one of the most challenging and attractive techniques that helps solve many

problems that vertical drilling cannot solve like drilling multiple wells from the same location

(Aadnoy B, 2009) . However, drilling several wells in the same location results in a high risk of

well collision that can cause serious catastrophic accidents and production losses. Therefore, if

the distance between two or more wells is close, anti-collision protocol should be applied to avoid

a well collision. This can be achieved by accurate well planning that takes into account the spacing

of peripheral wells. We know that in northern Peru there are a large number of directional wells,

so the danger of collision will always be present. Since the drill bit can be deflected when it comes

in contact with a hard formation. In addition, there is no accurate logging of the other directional

wells drilled in the area, which is a very serious problem to be avoided. Various measures or

proximity calculation methods have been adopted to control the distance between wells to avoid

collision, increase the clearance along with the smooth path and reduce the drilling time based

on the anti-collision rules. The present project aims to understand what is a collision and how to

apply anti-collision methods in northwestern Peru to prevent catastrophes during directional

drilling. So our case study is the Peruvian northwest because there are a number of directional

wells, so the danger of collapse is present.
