Wear on exhaust valve rocker arm

Changes
The following changes have been made in this
issue:

• The text in the section Production solution

has been changed and a table for the engine
number added.
• The part number has changed in the table un-
der the section Parts.

Background
It has been found that the wear washer on the
rocker arm to the exhaust valve has worn down
and cracked in certain engine designs. This has
occurred mainly in industrial and marine en-
gines, but also in certain vehicle engines. This
applies to vehicles and industrial engines pro-
duced from March 2004.

The damage to the rocker arm is not due to a

fault in it but is caused by the friction between
rocker arm and valve bridge.

Service Solution
If the exhaust valve rocker arm is replaced on
account of excessive wear the valve bridge
should also be replaced, even if it displays no
visible wear. Otherwise there is a risk that the
fault will recur. A new valve bridge will reduce
the friction and increase the service life of the
rocker arm.

Similar wear on the intake valve rocker arm ne-

cessitating its replacement should not normally
arise. If it is worn and requires replacement it
will probably be due to other causes.
