ACTIVITY 5
Are You L-O-S-T after Reflection?
(Most Essential Learning Competency: Predict the qualitative characteristics (orientation, type, and magnification) of images
formed by plane and curved mirrors and lenses)

I. Objective:
Construct ray diagrams to determine the location, orientation, size and type of images
formed by curved mirrors.

II. Materials:
Ruler and activity sheets

III. Procedure:
1. Using the ruler, make a ray diagram to locate and describe the image formed by a
spherical mirror. As much as possible, use the four principal rays to locate the
image formed in curved mirror.

CONVEX MIRROR

Guide Questions:
1. Refer to the Table. How does the location of the object affect the characteristics and
location of the image formed in a concave mirror? Convex mirror?
- The location of the object affect the characteristics and location of the image formed in
these curved mirrors. As the location of the object comes closer to the concave mirror, it
produces an image that will appear to be farther away from the mirror and becomes
enlarged and inverted. However, when an object is placed at the focal point, there will be
no image formed, and when an object is located between F and V, it will appear to be an
enlarged, upright, and virtual image, located behind the mirror. On the other hand, the
image formed in a convex mirror will always be upright, virtual, reduced in size, and
located behind the mirror (between F and V) in any location the object may be.

2. What type of mirror do dentists usually use to clearly see the images of our teeth? Why?
- Dentists use concave mirrors because it shows a magnified image of our teeth. It
makes it convenient for dentists to use as it shows an enlarged and more detailed
image, making it easy for them to examine the teeth.

3. What kind of curved mirror do you see in most of the department stores? Why do they use
such kind of mirror?
- We can see convex mirrors in most of the department stores, because it provides a wider
field of view, making it suitable for security purposes.
