February: Series production of the 350 SLC begins.
9 ­ 19 March: At the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes­Benz demonstrates the
current state of safety technology based on the 350 SLC, series production of
which began in February. Along with the safety body, with interior appointments
designed so as to reduce injury hazards in accidents, and a safety steering
system, the 350 SLC features many other safety­enhancing details developed by
Mercedes­Benz: the fuel tank protected against collision, the four­spoke safety
steering wheel, safety door handles and dirt­repelling side windows and tail lights.
April: The passenger car mid­series is expanded with the press release of the
280, 280 E, 280 C and 280 CE (W 114) in Frankfurt am Main and on the
Hockenheimring. All models are fitted with a newly­developed 2.8 liter engine
with twin overhead camshafts which delivers 160 hp in its carburetor variant and
185 hp in the fuel injection variant. At the same time laminated glass widscreen
become standard on all types.
May 31: The ESF 13 experimental safety vehicle, an updated version of the ESF
05, is presented at the third international ESV conference in Washington.
June 26: In Spain CISPALSA merges with the VW subsidiary IMOSA to create
MEVOSA (Compania Hispano Alemana de Productos Mercedes­Benz y
Volkswagen, S.A.), in which Daimler­Benz and VW each own a 26.8% stake.
July 20: Death of the Honorary Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Dr. Friedrich
Flick. A week later, Hermann J. Abs is named as his successor.
August: "Mercedes­Benz of North America" moves its headquarters to Montvale,
New Jersey/USA.
September 25: The new 116 series has its world premiere for the press on the
Costa Brava in Spain under the banner of the new "S­Class". The range consists
280 S, 280 SE and 350 SE. Public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.

Suddenly the "New Generation" Mercedes with trailing arm rear suspension, hitherto
available with engines from 2 to 2.5 litres enters the performance class with a new twin­
cam six of 2.8 litres. Hemispherical heads, sodium cooled exhaust valves and pistons
cooled by oil jets feature on an engine designed for high power and clean exhaust on low­
lead fuels. There is a carburetter model but only the fuel injection version comes to
Britain.

MERCEDES BENZ 350 SLC
Long­wheelbase coupe developed from the fast 350 SL two­seater. Doors are heated by
internal ducts. Screen pillar shape deflects mud and rain from side windows. Tail lamps
are deeply grooved to combat loss of light from mud deposits. There is a permanently
charged flashlight in the glove box. Interior design and control layout are planned for
maximum safety. Power steering is standard.

MERCEDES BENZ 280 SE
Sleeker, longer, wider, lower, the new big Mercedes adopts styling features from the
sporting 350 SL with safety ideas from the C111 and ESV safety cars. Front and rear
suspension are new. The 2.8­litre twin­cam engine, smallest of the range in this new
model can be mated with a four­speed automatic transmission by Mercedes Benz. Brakes
are ventilated discs.
MERCEDES BENZ 350 SE
Wrap­round lamps like those on the sports models and an extra air grille below the
bumper announce the new big Mercedes. The new structure with no sub frames gives
more room for the V8 engine. The high­style interior reveals many safety ideas including
a first­aid kit. Suspension is new, with self levelling optional and air conditioning is
available.
