About These Rigs
Rigs 835; 836; and 837 belong to Simmons Edeco’s MD Cowan fleet, a group of highly
efficient range III Mechanical Super Singles.
These rigs are equipped with automated features such as the hydraulic pipe arm for
handling tubular from the pipe rack into the derrick in pick up and lay down mode. The
pipe arm also comes with a hydraulic loading system that will take tubular from the pipe
racks and load them into the pipe arm. All of this is controlled from a safe area on the drill
floor on the off drillers side. These rigs are also equipped with an iron roughneck that
eliminates the use of manual rotary tongs and power slips that reduces critical pinch points
and potential back injury. With all of these mentioned automated components combined
with the 250 ton Power Swivel the risk of exposing personnel to the pipe handling area and
drill floor is greatly reduced.
These key characteristics of this drilling rig design have helped Simmons earn a reputable
position in the Mexican contract drilling market by reducing accidents, reducing
programmed drilling times, reducing rig move times and due to their small footprint have
been able to rig up on reduced sized locations.
- Less than 2% averaged downtime since 2010-present
- Drilled over 125 wells in Mexico for clients like Compañia Petrolera
Altamira, Weatherford/Pemex, Baker/Pemex, Tonalli/IFR, Schlumberger and
Halliburton, in the range of 1,000 m. – 3,600 m. (MD)
- They move in 28 loads.
- The MD Cowans requires a minimum crew size to operate efficiently.
- Remote pipe handling and BOP systems improve efficiency and safety.

PIPE HANDLING SYSTEM
MD Cowan Pipe Arm, with jaws that adapt to different tubular sizes, handles 8” bit subs
and 10 ¾” Casing. The hydraulic pressure of the jaws is adjusted depending on the
tubular being handled.
IRON ROUGHNECK
Installed on the mast, it allows going up/down, enter/exit, and handles tubular of up to 8”,
bit subs and 65,000 lb.-ft. maximum torque.
