AOAC Official Method 945.16
Oil in Cereal Adjuncts
Petroleum Ether Extraction Method
First Action 1945
Final Action
A. Reagent
Petroleum ether.—AOCS. Initial boiling temperature, 35°–38°C;
dry-flask end point, 52°–60°C; ³95% distilling at <54°C, and £60%
dis till ing at <40°C; specific grav ity at 60°F, 0.630–0.660;
appearance, colorless; evaporation residue, £0.0011 g/100 mL;
doctor test, sweet; Cu strip corrosion test, noncorrosive; only trace
of unsaturated compounds permitted; residue in distilling flask,
neutral to methyl orange; blotter strip odor test, odorless within
12 min; aromatic compounds, no nitrobenzene odor; saponification
value, <1.0 mg KOH/100 mL.
Make distillation test according to ASTM method D216-54 and
make blank determination by evaporating 250 mL with ca 0.25 g
stearin or other hard fat (previously brought to constant weight by
heating) and drying as in actual determination. Blank must be
£3 mg.
B. Determination
(Cau tion: See Appendix B, safety notes on dis til la tion,
flammable solvents, and petroleum ether.)
Accurately weigh 5–10 g test portion ground as in 935.30D (see
27.3.07). Without previous drying, extract in Soxhlet or other
suitable extractor with petroleum ether for £6 h. Filter extract
through small, hardened paper into weighed vessel, washing paper
finally with small portion of hot fresh solvent. Distil or evaporate
solvent at temperature £100°C and dry vessel containing residue in
air oven 1 h at 100°–105°C. Report as % oil to second decimal place.
