FUNCTIONS OF BUILDINGS DEPARTMENT

Buildings Department is the Construction Agency for all the

departments of Greater Chennai Corporation and Superintending Engineer is the

Head of the Department.

The Proposals of various departments of Greater Chennai Corporation,

are processed in Buildings Department by doing investigation, estimation, tendering

and execution as per their requirements. Apart from this, Additions, Improvement

works are also executed for all buildings by Buildings Department. The type of

buildings involved are School Buildings, Office buildings like Divisional/Units/Zonal

/Regional Offices, Health buildings like Urban primary health center, Urban

community health center, Burial Grounds, Gasifier /Electrical Crematorium with

equipments, Child Welfare Centres and other buildings like Auditoriums, Shopping

Complex/Markets, Fish Markets, Community Centres/Marriage Halls, Lorry

operational depot, Dhobikanas, Slaughter Houses, Stadiums , and Restoration of

heritage buildings such as Ripon Building and Victoria Public hall.

The funds for Special projects, are funded from HUDCO, TNUDF,

TNUFIDCO, CRRT, NULM and NUHM.

The Building Department also functions as a facilitation centre for

MLACD and MPLAD funds for MLA/MPs who have chosen Greater Chennai

Corporation as their nodal department. This wing of the department, ensures

receipt of MLACD and MPLAD funds from government and disburse the funds for

the works recommended by the respective MLAs/MPs and on completion of the

works, obtain utilisation certificate from the concerned district authorities where the

work has been undertaken.

The Buildings Department is functioning with one Superintending

Engineer, Four Executive Engineer, Six Assistant Executive Engineers, Nine

Assistant /Junior Engineers. All the Establishment works for building department

staffs such as Salaries, pension etc. are also carried out in this Department.
