MODULE 7 – DESCRIBING CHEMICAL REACTIONS

ATOMIC MASS

The number that appears above the atomic symbol is called the atomic number.

ATOMIC NUMBER: The number of protons that an atom has in the nucleus.

The number that appears below the atomic symbol is called the atomic mass.

ATOMIC MASS: Tell us how heavy the atom is. The bigger the atomic mass, the heavier
the atom.

C= 12,011 u.m.a. – UNIDAD DE MASA ATOMICA a.m.u. ATOMIC MASS UNIT

MASA EN GRAMOS DE UN ÁTOMO DE CARBONO: 1.99X10-23 gramos

aproximadamente

1.66X10-24 gramos = 1 a.m.u.

What is the mass of 1 nitrogen atom in grams?

Nitrogen 14 a.m.u
−2 4
14.0 amu 1.66 x 10 g −2 3
× =2.32 x 10 gramos
1 1 amu

What is the mass of 1 lithium atom in kg?

Lithium 6.94 a.m.u

6.94 amu 1.66 x 10−2 4 g −2 3

× =1.15 x 10 gramos
1 1 amu
−20
1.15 x 10 Kg
MOLECULAR MASS

The molecular mass is the sum of the individual atomic mass of the atoms that form the
molecule.

CHCl3
Mass of CH Cl3 =1× 12.0 amu+1 ×1.01 amu+3 ×35.5 amu=119.51 amu

What is the mass of a Si6F12O6 molecule in grams?

Mass of Si 6 F 12 O6 =6 ×28 . 1 amu+12 ×1 9 .0 amu+ 6 ×16 . 0 amu=492.6 amu

What is the mass of a sodium sulfate molecule in grams?

Mass of Na2 S O4=2 ×2 3.0 amu +1× 32. 1 amu+ 4 × 16.0 amu=142.1 amu

THE MOLE CONCEPT

1 mole atoms = 6.02x1023 atoms

1 mole molecules = 6.02x1023 molecules

THE ATOMIC MASS IN AMU WILL GIVE THE MASS
OF 1 ATOM. THE ATOMIC MASS IN GRAMS WILL
GIVE THE MASS OF 1 MOLE OF THE ATOM

A MOLECULE´S MASS IN AMU WILL GIVE THE

MASS OF 1 MOLECULE. THE MOLECULE`S MASS
IN GRAMS WILL GIVE THE MASS OF 1 MOLE OF
THAT MOLECULE

How many moles of fluorine atoms exist in a 50.0 grams sample of

fluorine?

19.0 grams fluorine = 1 mole fluorine (conversion factor)

50.0 g 1mole
× =2.63 moles fluorine
1 19.0 g

How many moles of hydrogen atoms exist in a 35.0 grams sample of

hydrogen?

1.0 grams hydrogen = 1 mole hydrogen (conversion factor)

35.0 g 1 mole
× =35 moles hydrogen
1 1.0 g
