7.2.2 Manufacture
If not otherwise specified the material ductility of the socket safety parts shall satisfy the Charpy V-notch energy
requirement of 27J at –20 °C.
The roughness of the cone surface shall allow the cone setting under tension.
The socket shall be NDT tested, by ultrasonic and magnetic particles inspection. Surfaces to be inspected shall be
identified by the designer.
Cast sockets shall be X-rays tested in the parts identified by the designer. The acceptance criteria (severity levels)
shall be in accordance with the prescriptions of EN 1 559-2.

7.2.3 Socketing
Socketing shall be performed accordingly to EN 1 341 1 -4 with the following additions:
Any lubricant on the wires shall be removed by cleaning.
No mixing of different alloys, nor contaminations is allowed.
The flux used for this operation shall be completely removed.
For Metal socketing two types of method are applicable:
a) “adhesion” type:
1 ) all the bright wires shall be tinned;
2) galvanized wires are recommended to be tinned;
b) “friction” type:
1 ) tinning nor pickling is not permitted;
2) the wires shall not be straightened; if the wires are waved, the wave length shall be between 5 and 1 0
times the wire diameter and the amplitude of the wave shall be at least 1 ,5 times the wire diameter
The composition of metal alloys shall conform to Table 1 .
Table 1 – Composition of metal alloys
Composition%
Alloy type
Sn Al Pb Cu Sb Cd Zn As
For socketing, all the wires of the rope (excluding those of guy and signal ropes) shall be hooked with the following
requirements:
the internal bending diameter shall be at least 1 ,5 times the wire diameter or height;
the hook length shall be at least 8 times the wire diameter or height;
For track ropes, a device to inject an anticorrosion medium into the socket after socketing may be integrated.
After socketing any deterioration of the rope lubrication shall be recovered.
Socketing means different from those specified above may be accepted subject to checking their adequacy to the
design by both breaking tests in conformity with EN 1 341 1 -4 and competent person approval.
When the pouring or curing temperature may affect the compactness of the rope core, the core may be replaced
with a mean able to resist at such temperature and suitable to maintain the strand separation at the working load of
the ropes. The rope diameter under the working load close to the socket neck shall be equal to or higher than the
rope diameter measured 5 lay lengths apart.
After socketing the cone shall be inspected to check its filling and repositioned in its original position.
Socket and rope tensioning shall be done after complete curing or cooling of the socketing medium.
NOTE For the purpose of cleaning the wires, solvents, which favour corrosion, should not be used.

8.3 Manufacture
The parts shall be NDT tested, by ultrasonic and magnetic particles inspection on 1 00 % of the surface.
8.4 Execution
Assembly and inspection of the dry cone shall be performed by a competent person.
After each assembling the clamp socket movable parts shall be allowed to relative movement.
If not otherwise specified by the designer, the settlement of the dry cone shall not exceed the following limits:

l ≤ 1, 0 × d for Seale
l ≤ 1 , 0 × + 0, 2 ×
d d for Seale
l ≤ 1 , 5 × + 0, 2 ×
d d for Warrington Seale
After the assembling, the clamp socket shall be filled with a suitable lubricant.
NOTE Such lubricant should be selected to be compatible with ropes original lubricants and plastic component of clamp
socket.
If not otherwise specified by the socket designer, the cone lubricant shall be free of acid and digestible with the
rope lubricant and the sleeve material. Such a lubricant should not harden to wax at the lowest design temperature.
