Thermodynamics I – 2020 – Exam 1 - Problem 1

Electronic device is cooled with mixture of liquid water and ice. Temperature of the mixture at the inlet is
0°C and mass fraction of ice is 20%. The heat power generated in the electronic device is 100W and N%
of all heat generated is transferred immediately to the ambient air and rest to the working fluid. The outlet
temperature of water is 5°C. Diameter of the inlet and outlet are 1 cm. Determine (a) mass flow rate of
cooling medium, and (b) the velocity of water at the outlet. Assume that densities of ice and water are
the same, equal to 1000 kg/m3. Specific heat of water is 4.2 kJ/(kgK) and latent heat of melting of ice is
333 kJ/kg. Neglect changes in kinetic and potential energies between inlet and outlet. Parameter N is
equal to a number of letters in the student’s first name.

Short instruction

1. On the page where the solution of the problem is sent back the following student’s declaration should
be submitted:
------------------------------------------------------------------
I declare that this piece of work which is the basis for recognition of achieving learning outcomes in the
Thermodynamics I course was completed on my own.
First and last name:
Student record book number (Student ID number):
Date: y/m/d
-----------------------------------------------------------------

2. The test is published in MS Teams, and the only accepted way to submit a solution is to send it via MS
Teams. After you open the assignment (“view Assignment”) you will be able to open the file with the
problem statement. After you solve the test, you should take a photo or photos or scan of your solution
and upload this/them to MS Teams. To do that, you use option “Add work” (or “Add”) which is placed
below the “reference materials”, click “upload from my computer” (or “upload from this device” – or
something similar) at the bottom of the panel and select one or more (if possible in a single round) jpg or
pdf files with your solution. Check how many files you attached! If something is missing, add missing
files. You must finalize uploading clicking “turn in”. Keep in mind that uploading of the files after the
deadline is impossible.

Test send via e-mail will be not assessed.
