Tutorial – 4
Topic: Uncontrolled Rectifier circuits and their performance parameters

1. A half-wave rectifier is supplying an RL load with R=100 Ω and L=0.1H. The

supply parameters are Vm = 100V and ω=377 rad/sec. Find the average values of
input and output currents, average output voltage, power absorbed by the load for
the cases (a) with a free-wheeling diode across RL and (b) without a
free-wheeling diode.
2. A capacitor of 100µF is used to filter out ripples in the output voltage of a
half-wave diode rectifier which is supplying a purely resistive load of 500Ω. If
the supply rms voltage is 120V at 60Hz, then,
a. Derive the expression for output voltage.
b. Find the peak to peak variation of the output before and after connecting
the filter capacitor.
c. Peak diode current
d. How much should be the value of filter capacitor if the variation of output
voltage is to be limited to 1% of peak supply voltage.
3. In a single-phase full wave diode bridge rectifier, the diodes have a reverse
recovery times of 40µs. For an ac input voltage of 230V, determine the effect of
reverse recovery time on the average output voltage for an ac supply of (a) 50Hz
and (b) 2.5 kHz.
4. A 230V, 50Hz supply is connected to a 1ph transformer which feeds a full wave
diode bridge rectifier, with primary winding to be half in size as compared to
secondary winding. The output current is ripple free having a magnitude of 10A.
Determine, (a) Average output voltage, (b) input current distortion factor, (c)
input displacement factor (d) input power factor (e ) input current harmonic factor
and, (f) crest factor
5. A single phase full wave diode bridge rectifier is required to supply load of
R=10Ω at a dc voltage of 230V. Determine the diode ratings and transformer
rating required for this configuration. Take transformer ratio as 2.
6. A load of R=60Ω is fed from a 1-ph, 230V, 50Hz supply through a step-up
transformer and a diode. The transformer ratio is 2. Find the VA rating of the
transformer.

load and compare the theoretical and simulated values.
2. Sketch the output waveforms, using theoretical calculations, of a half-wave diode
rectifier supplying to a resistive load of R=10 kΩ and a filter capacitor of C =
47µF. Determine the magnitude of ripple in the output voltage waveform.
Compare the theoretical values with MATLAB simulation.
3. Find the total harmonic distortion for the following cases,
a. Constant output current of half-wave rectifier of 10A.
b. Sinusoidal output current of a half-wave rectifier with peak value of 10A.
c. (a) and (b) for full-wave rectifier case.

4. A single-phase diode bridge rectifier is fed from 230V, 50 Hz source connected to

a load of R=400Ω.
