Blumentritt wrote extensively about the Philippines, despite never visiting the country, and corresponded
with José Rizal, a Filipino student and writer who later became a national hero, when he was still a
student. Blumentritt's friendship with Rizal dates back to July of 1886. Despite only meeting Rizal once,
Blumentritt became one of his closest confidants. He wrote the preface to Rizal's second book, El
filibusterismo, and translated a chapter of the latter's first book, Noli Me Tangere, into German, despite
his opposition to its publication because he believed it would lead to Rizal's death. These two novels are
disguised commentaries that enraged both the Catholic Church and the Spanish colonial government,
leading to Rizal's trial and execution in 1896. Rizal wrote his final letter to Blumentritt before his
execution in Manila. Blumentritt was a major contributor to the publication La Solidaridad, which was
published by Filipino expatriates from 1889 to 1895 as a voice for advocacy of political reforms in the
Philippines, alongside Rizal. Blumentritt was a significant contributor to the publication La Solidaridad,

and streets in the Philippines are named after him. Blumentritt Road, Blumentritt LRT Station,
Blumentritt PNR Station, Blumentritt Market, and Blumentritt Street in Naga City and Tuguegarao are

the Philippine towns of Calamba, Rizal's birthplace, and Dapitan, where Rizal was first exiled.
