Garbage is a serious problem in the United States. Every year, Americans produce 308 billion pounds
of garbage (about 140 billion kilos). A lot of garbage goes into landfills, but there are not enough
landfills for all the garbage.
One answer to the garbage problem is recycling. About half of all the garbage in the USA can be
recycled and used again. Recycling helps people solve the landfill problem and save natural resources.
For examples, tires can be recycled to make pipes and floor coverings; glass is collected and sent to
the factories to make into new glassware. Moreover, household and garden waste are collected to
make compost. Therefore, everybody should know how to protect the environment and save natural
resources.
