PHRASAL VERBS
It is made up of a verb and a particle.

Particles look like prepositions, but they do not function as one.


Particles change the meaning of the verb.

Verb + preposition Verb + particle

I looked up to see the plane. I looked up the word online.

Tim runs up the hill. Tim runs up the phone bill.

PHRASAL VERBS: SEPARABLE
The object (noun or pronoun) can separate the phrasal verb

The pronoun cannot follow the phrasal verb

Verb + particle + Obj. Alex asked out Erin on a date.

Verb + Obj. + particle Alex asked Erin out on a date.

Alex asked out her on a date.

Alex asked her out on a date.


PHRASAL VERBS: INSEPARABLE
The object (noun or pronoun) can only follow the phrasal verb

Verb + particle + Obj.

Alex couldn't get over her. Alex couldn't get her over.
Erin ran into Alex yesterday. Erin ran Alex into yesterday.
PHRASAL VERBS: INTRANSITIVE
Some phrasal verbs do not take an object
