Reflection: Introduction to Food and Beverages

Ever since I was a kid, it brings me joy to be able to serve other people, like
preparing or cooking foods for them. I like to be organized in everything and make sure
that everyone is well and comfortable. Because of this I took Bachelor of Science in
hospitality management. Taking this degree program will allow me to keep doing what I
like to do and be able to earn profit from it. As I venture my journey in my degree
program, I stumbled upon one course which surprised me because of the amount of
learning that I was able to gather from it. It was entitled introduction to Food and
Beverages.

Studying introduction to food and beverages was really enjoyable. I learned that
food and beverages sector is related to tourism industry because this allows flight
attendant to serve foods for the guests. Aside from that I also learned that there are
specific rules and duties assigned for different food and beverages staff. There are staff
who are responsible for cooking while others are assigned to serving the food. Other
than that, I am very glad that I learned what are the practices and skills needed to be a
professional food and beverage staff. These skills may sound easy, but I assure you
that it is not as easy as it sounds. Though I encountered some difficulties mastering
these skills because of the current set up I still enjoyed it, nevertheless. I also had the
chance to know what are the personal safety practices such as maintain cleanliness
through frequent hand washing and make sure to wear proper attire when handling
foods to avoid contamination. For the last and final lesson, I leaned the 5s of good
house keeping which is very relevant for my degree program. These 5s are sort,
systematize, shine, standardizes and sustain.

Learning everything of these was not an easy thing to do because of the

limitations due to distance learning brought by the pandemic. I feel like I can develop a
lot more skill if took this course in a face-to-face classroom teaching. Though I have
experienced some difficulties I still learned because of the discussions provided and
other activities that I did which somehow compensates to an actual learning. All in all I
am glad to have the chance to learn and be more knowledgeable about this course.
