1 INSTALLATION OF NETWORK MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

1 INSTALLATION OF NETWORK MANAGEMENT

SOFTWARE
Introduction This chapter will explain how to install the network management
software on a PC or laptop.
The software consists of two basic sets:
The NECTAS or NOCTAS basic management software.
The application or Craft Terminal (CT) software, which
depends on the network elements present in the
configuration.

NECTAS/NOCTAS The software for the network management of these systems

depends upon the network configuration (refer also to Section 3:
Electrical installation):
The Network Element Craft Terminal Application
Software (NECTAS) is used if an Equipment Craft
Terminal (ECT) is connected directly to the Finterface of the
Common Network Controller Circuit (CNCC).
The Network Office Craft Terminal Application
Software (NOCTAS) is used if an Office Craft Terminal (OCT)
is connected to a mediation equipment, which in turn is
connected to the Q2-interface of a number of systems.
The NECTAS/NOCTAS software runs under Microsoft (MS)
WINDOWS ( of Microsoft corporation) and uses the normal
Windows features for loading and executing programs.
The system requirements of the Personal Computer (PC) for the
installation and execution of the NECTAS/NOCTAS software are
listed in the corresponding manual.

2 INITIALIZATION OF A MULTIPLEXER SYSTEM

2 INITIALIZATION OF A MULTIPLEXER SYSTEM

Introduction In order to make the multiplexer operational, a number of system
parameters have to be initialized by means of the manmachine
commands via a service terminal.
These parameters are related to the following features (refer to
Section 4: Operation):
Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) error monitoring.
Channel mapping (connection of audio or data signals to the
2 Mbit/s PCM signal) and signalling selection (according to
the equipped channel types).
Gain setting, balance network matching and setting of other
configurable board parameters.

Contents This chapter covers the following topics:

 CRC error monitoring.
 Channel mapping.
 Setting network parameters.
 System configuration.
 Remarks.

3AL 42451 AAAA TNAAA Ed. 01 9 / 26

2 INITIALIZATION OF A MULTIPLEXER SYSTEM

CRC Error Monitoring The CRC error monitoring procedure has to be enabled or
Procedure disabled, according to the requirements of the remote system. The
status has to be the same on the two sides of each link,
irrespective of the actual monitoring being on or off.

Error Mapping The selection of the signalling type of each channel depends upon
the equipped Channel and Signalling Unit (CSU) for that channel.
The possible signalling types for the equipped CSU's are given in
the Appendix of the IED manual (document code: 3AL 42451
AAAA-ANAAA).

Setting Network The gain setting, balance network matching and setting of other
Parameters configurable board parameters is realized according to the local
requirements and the possibilities on each CSU. For the available
options on the equipped CSU's, refer to the corresponding
descriptions in the Appendix of the IED manual (document code:
3AL 42451 AAAA-ANAAA).
For the channel mapping, the channel signals on the CSU's are
connected to the 2 Mbit/s signal on the PCM controller unit in 2
steps:
On a CSU the channel signals are converted in PCM signals
and connected to the internal buses under the control of the
Common Trunk Circuit (CTC). The connection of the channel
signals to the bus channels can be determined in two ways
now, depending upon the equipped CTC version on the
CSU's:
On the CSU's with a nonprogrammable CTC (CTC1,
CTC2), the connection of the channel signals to the bus
channels is fixed. It is determined by the position of the
unit on the subrack or desktop housing.
On the CSU's with a programmable CTC (CTC3), the
connection of the channel signals to the bus channels can
be chosen freely by means of manmachine commands
via a service terminal.
The position of the channel signals on the 2 Mbit/s PCM
signal can be chosen freely by means of the Time Space
Switch (TSS) on the PCM controller unit. This channel mapping
is contained in the system configuration. Different system
configurations, with specific routing, signalling type and gain
settings per channel, can be stored simultaneously in the
memory (refer to Section 4: Operation).

10 / 26 3AL 42451 AAAA TNAAA Ed. 01

2 INITIALIZATION OF A MULTIPLEXER SYSTEM

System Configuration The system configuration in firmware of the multiplexer system

should be set according to the actually equipped channel and
signalling units and the local requirements for gain and
parameter setting and channel mapping. This can be realized by
means of manmachine commands via a service terminal.
Follow this procedure to verify if the system configuration is correct
and, if necessary, adapt the configuration:

Step Action
1 Display the system configuration (either the active one
or an inactive one), which will be used.
2 When the configuration is not correct, adapt the
following:
If the configuration is already operational on the
multiplexer, all the channels to be adapted can be
disabled in order not to disturb traffic.
Add, remove or replace channel units.
 Modify the channel mapping.
 Modify the signalling type.
 Modify the channel gain.
Modify the balance network or other configurable
parameters (only for units with CTC3, see remark
below).
3 Display the system configuration and verify if it is
correct.
4 Activate the configuration in order to make the system
operate according to this configuration and to permit
traffic again.

3AL 42451 AAAA TNAAA Ed. 01 11 / 26

2 INITIALIZATION OF A MULTIPLEXER SYSTEM

Remarks When the configuration information is given, it is stored in

memory and will not be lost in case of power failure on the
multiplexer. As soon as the power supply returns, the
information is transferred from nonvolatile to RAM memory
and the multiplexer becomes operational.
During the configuration of the multiplexer system (refer to the
separate CNCC Application Software manual for the 2 Mbit/s
multiplexer), the strap settings on the multiplexer system units
should be introduced on the relevant screens.
When the configuration of a multiplexer is changed (channel
units removed, added or replaced by different type), the
system configuration in software should be adapted as well to
make the system operate correctly.
In case an N x 64 kbit/s data interface unit is provided, some
special restrictions have to be taken into account for the time
slot allocation (refer to the corresponding description in the
Appendix of the IED manual (document code: 3AL 42451
AAAA-ANAAA)).
The balance network adjustment and setting of other
configurable parameters can only be realized in case the
channel and signalling unit is provided with the
programmable CTC (CTC3). The equipped CTC version on
each CSU is indicated in the corresponding description in
Appendix of the IED manual (document code: 3AL 42451
AAAA-ANAAA).
The configuration of a multiplexer can be very complex,
specially in case of drop and insert of channels and/or digital
channel distribution. For this reason the configuration
principles are explained by means of examples in the
Technical manual Section 4: Operation.

3 INITIALIZATION OF A LINE SYSTEM

3 INITIALIZATION OF A LINE SYSTEM

Introduction The line terminal of the Subscriber Line System (SLS) situated at
the secondary side is supervised and controlled by the line
terminal located at the main side. The intermediate regenerators
are also controlled by the main line terminal. The information
needed to control and supervise the remote terminal and
intermediate regenerators is embedded in the 2 Mbit/s line signal
used to transmit the 2 Mbit/s data.

CNCC The CNCC can collect all supervisory information from the
equipments, which is stored and processed by the CNCC to derive
the necessary alarms and statistics. Via a CT and the necessary
associated software, the user can send and receive information
to/from the CNCC, locally with the Finterface or remotely with the
Q2interface.

3AL 42451 AAAA TNAAA Ed. 01 13 / 26

3 INITIALIZATION OF A LINE SYSTEM

Craft Terminal At the installation of a line system some characteristics of the

Functions system operation have to be set. This is realized via the CT, which
is used to set the following functions:
Set the equipment addresses for a mediation equipment
(if applicable).
Select the line system configuration (with or without protection
switching, number of regenerators).
Select the automatic stop and restart criteria for the line feed,
as well as the restart delay.
Set the thresholds for the high and low error ratio alarm
detection.
In addition the CT allows to perform a number of remote controls
on the connected line systems:
Select the active line in case of an automatic protection
switching system.
Set and remove loops on the local or remote line terminal unit
or on the intermediate line regenerators.
Force an Alarm Indication Signal (AIS) on the line or G.703
output of the local or remote line terminal unit.
Switch the line feed on or off on the local line terminal unit.
Set and remove ringing on the local line terminal unit towards
the line.
For detailed information, refer to the separate CNCC Application
Software manual for the line terminal system.

4 SYSTEM TEST

4 SYSTEM TEST
Introduction When all connections are realized (according to Section 3:
Electrical Installation) and the battery voltage is applied to the
systems (by activating the automatic fuses on the installation
module), the systems will generate alarm indications as they do
not receive a Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) input signal.
In order to avoid this, the 2 Mbit/s outputs of the systems can be
linked to the inputs. In this way all alarm indications should
disappear. If not, refer to the Technical manual Section 6: Fault
location.
