1 Function
This unit converts the 115 V AC mains voltage to the 48 V DC battery voltage. Part of the
output power is intended for floating and charging a battery which provides for the power
in case of mains failure.
This board is intended to be used in combination with an RPGA board (3AL 43050). The
AC/DC convertor will provide the -48 V on the backpanel. The RPGA board will provide
the +5 V and the -5 V power supplies and the ringing current.
If ringing current is not required, then the RPGA board is not required if an
NOTICE AC/DC converter 3AL 42929 is being used. This board will then provide the +5
V and the -5 V power supplies.
2 Output Voltage
The value of the -48V output voltage can be controlled as a function of the ambient
temperature of the battery in order to meet the voltage/temperature characteristic of the
battery (shown below).

4 End of Discharge
To prevent battery damage, an EOD unit (End Of Discharge) unit is mounted to switch
between battery charging and subrack fed by battery.

Backup battery
This EOD unit drives a switch that shall be equipped in a separate module in between the
battery and the system in order to switch off the battery from the load in case of
overdischarge of the battery at a mains failure. The control for switching off this end of
discharge switch shall be done inside the converter, giving the appropriate signal to the
switchmodule via a front connector.

Be sure never to interrupt the safety ground when the AC/DC converter is
connected to the AC mains source.
Before removing the AC/DC converter from the subrack, interrupt the AC mains
voltage and wait for at least 4 minutes to allow the discharging of the internal
WARNING capacitors before handling the unit.
All adjustments, replacements, repairs,... should be carried out by a qualified
person, aware of the hazards involved, with the converter completely
disconnected from the AC power source.

6 Operational data
AC mains input:
input voltage:
nominal: 115 V
minimum: 85 V
maximum: 132 V
input frequency: 47 to 63 Hz
the converter is switched off in case of input undervoltage
DC output:
output voltage: -48V + 10 V
maximum load: 3 A
overcurrent protection (current limiting): between 3,15 and 3,75 A
overvoltage protection (converter switched off): -59 V maximum
undervoltage alarm: between -33 and -37 V
efficiency: 83 % at maximum load
parallel operation of the converters is possible (output via separation diodes)
End of discharge protection:
V battery switch-off:
V minimum: -42 V
V maximum: -44 V
An alarm signal is generated in the following cases:
input undervoltage (the converter is switched off)
output overvoltage (the converter is switched off)
output undervoltage (the converter is not switched off)
